i am in the process of buying a cz858, i got the pick of the bunch and am excited to play with the little beast. the only problem is that since it is non restricted barrel length, apparently the factory removed the chrome lined shorter barrels and replaced them with non-chrome lined longer ones. before anyone goes on about how i dont need a chrome lined barrel because im not in combat etc etc, know that i, like many of you just like to have the most rugged and reliable tools available. i talked to my smith and he said chroming after the fact was a bad idea. so does anyone know of chrome lined longer barrels that are available for the cz, or any other solutions? thanks

It doesn't matter. Just clean your rifle.

There are no chrome-lined 858's. Marstar imported a small number of chrome-lined, non-res rifles they called the VZ58L. Occasionally you'll see one in the EE.

I wonder why they don't just chrome up the longer barrels... is it an expensive process? why leave the 858 out in the cold?

If not maintained a chrome lined barrel will still deteriorate when you use corrosive ammo. Just clean the gun and everything will be fine.

If you search there is info somewhere on here explaining the difference between the CZ 858 and the CZH 2003, they are different factories and different builds. The VZ58L was a limited production run as it is hard to complete some part of the chroming process in Czech. (either materials or work, I'm not sure). As far as I know Marstar was the only company that brought in non-restricted Chrome Lined Barrels and that was long enough ago that no one has seen them new for a while. The details are here somewhere but I'm not sure where.

I have read poor reviews of the cement bore liners but I haven't used them myself so I can't say 100%.

If the chrome barrel was available I would be all over it, but in instead the regular barrel has been no issue.

Is it true that un-chromed barrel's are more accurate than chromed barrel's?
Also do chrome barrel's stay cleaner than the un-chromed ones?

Unchromed barrels are generally more accurate than chromed, but you'd really never notice the difference unless you're trying to build a sniper/match rifle.

And it's not that chrome stays necessarily cleaner, but that it's more resistant to the effects of corrosive ammo and general rusting.

any other solutions? thanks

Buy a kettle.
The boiling water rinse is the best solution and it only adds a few minutes to the cleaning procedure.

Unless you're one of those guys who can't be bothered to clean his guns. In which case, you'll have to swear off corrosive surplus 7.62x39.
The cheapest non-corrosive I ever found was 32 cents a round, which is still double the cost of the corrosive stuff. Be prepared to pay up to a buck a round unless you reload.

I've owned chromed and non-chromed variants of the VZ58 and I gotta admit, the chromed barrel version is easier to clean.

I haven't owned a chrome-lined one, but I don't think I own enough cleaning supplies to actually get a "clean" patch out of my 858's.

+1 on the boiling water method. If I'm rushed and dont have time to do a proper cleaning, I break the gun down, and wash everything with boiling water , and then a soaking in WD 40. Takes maybe 15 min.

Glad to read I'm not the only one using up tons of patches !!!!

Newmer

I noticed that if I used the hot water method with wipe out. I don't have to run to many patches threw. But I am a lazy ass and only feed my CZ 858 non corrosive and my sks get's the corrosive treatment.

I alternate a borebrush with the boiling water.

If you scrub out the crap and rinse it away with the water you might find that your patch usage will decrease significantly. ;)

I just don't care about mine being that clean. As long as the salt is gone and there's no chunks, it doesn't matter to me if the patches still have some crap on them.
