Just wondering if the chrome lined barrels realllly make a big difference when shooting corrosive surplus ammo in humid areas?

I ask because I'm planning on buying a non-rest CZ858 which are plentiful and cheap compared to finding a VZ58L on EE. Not having owned either, I'm not sure what I'd be missing by going with a non-chrome, or how much extra cleaning work it is. I've read many of the posts about this subject and the arguements seem to be split between it being marketing hype, and it being very helpful in keeping rust away.

Thanks for any feedback. I *DO* plan on cleaning it after shooting... though may not always be able to do it the same day. So if chrome will save me problems there, I can take the time to wait to find one.

FWIW my view is No. I have a CZ858 Non restricted and I have burnt thru almost two cases of ammo with it ( fabulous rifle btw - it acccompanies me most weekends to the range ) and I clean it well after each use. I live in rainy Vancouver and there isn't a speck of rust on the rifle. Personally, I think too much is made out of the whole corrosive vs non-corrosive ammo stuff; remember that in WWI and WWII nearly every firearm shot used corrosive ammo and the lads on the Somme, Italy and Normandy didn't have the luxury of hot soappy water and/or windex to use daily.

I have a 858-2. non chrome lined barrel.
Around 700 rounds down the pipe and no signs of rust.
Simply pour boiling water on everything that is exposes to gases, and regular cleaning and you should be fine.

CZ858 is the way to go even if it doesn't have the chromed lined barrel. It is worth it just to hunt with it or take it anywhere in the bush.
