chrome lined barrel

There are chrome lined barrels and "chrome lined" barrels - as with all barrels if you buy a good quality one you will have much less chance of an issue than if you buy the cheapest tube you can find. The chrome lining isn't the only issue though - Norc barrels have some really hard chrome on them, but they're certainly not match grade. If you want match grade accuracy you have a better chance of getting a better result with an unplated barrel. The chrome is really only there to extend the life of barrels used in FA guns or for guns that get very high round counts, or get used with corrosive ammo.

These stories of flaking are usually started by people who don't even own an AR.

I know a few people who have a few tens of thousands of rounds in chrome lined barrels, it didn't spit out chrome plating, and it never will.

It's mainly to extend a barrel's life and to promote corrosion protection.

I imagine that might be to case!!:p

Chrome lined barrels not being accurate is a myth. I have (or had) a wide variety of chrome barrelled pieces that have been very accurate.

In the past, the lack of consistant/uniform application of chrome lining has been a (theoretical) hindrance to accuracy. It boils down to quality of application. Then you won't get flaking issues either.

I favor chrome lined barrels because they last longer. And in Kanada you need your stuff to last as long as possible because you never know when we'll suddenly face a complete import ban on parts, barrels, etc., Besides, chrome barrels/chambers help with reliable extraction on semi-autos.

Chrome lining all the way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off I would not hesitate to have a chrome lined barrel . Never seen flaking issues with a decent brand barrel

As far as accuracy goes, you can get suprisingly good accuracy from a good chrome lined barrel. Far more accurate than most people can hold offhand and for its intended purpose

To say however that a chrome lined barrel can be as accurate as a good non chrome lined is too general a statement

I have yet to have a chrome lined shoot as good as a premium stainless barrel such as Noveske ( Pac Nor blank ) , Krieger, Satern cut rifle. Even my RRA with a el cheapo ER Shaw stainless barrel was freakishly accurate

My comparion is based on the following chrome lined barrels

Colt Canada in KAC SR15 upper and FN USA barrel in Noveske N4

Don't get me wrong...both these uppers are more accurate than I need them to be.

If you are punching tiny holes in paper at a range however, IMO these chrome lined barrels are not the first choice

Our SR-25 EMC and M110 Carbine barrels are chromed.

They generally shoot .5MOA or better.

Two guns with two shooter @ 800m with four ammo's and 2x5rd group per shooter per ammo averaged under .5MOA at that range (16" chrome lined barrel)

Chrome will flake, but thats at high round counts when the barrel is pooched anyway.
And usually from underlying imperfections brought out in the heat cycle of abused barrels

You Bet!
It's easier for a barrel maker to make an accurate non-chrome lined barrel because chrome lining a barrel adds another step where things can go wrong. But quality makers such as Steyr with their famous SSG-69 and FN with the SPR sniper rifles have the process mastered (as well as Knight I should add!). I can't think of how they can otherwise meet some of the barrel life serviceability requirements as laid down by their military customers.

I used to frequently run into competitive shooters who did barrel changes every year. What a pain that would be.....

In fact, I'm such a fan of chrome lining that I'm gonna get my toilet chrome lined....not only would it help prevent "jams", but it would also be easier to clean:):):):)

You would also be able to extract yourself easier when you sit down with the lid up in the night.
