I have a CZ-858 and I like to shoot cheap surplus ammo. Is it possible to get the barrel chrome lined? If so where in Vancouver could I get such a process done and at what cost? Thanks!

hmmm... I was just thinking the same thing, only non-chromed barrels are available for the non-restricted market at this time... would it be easy to get your own barrel chromed??

and a bit off topic but... is it really important to get a chromed barrel? someone told me non-chromed barrels where more accurate and chromed barrels are only meant for quick fire 30 rounds mags :D I know some of that is b.s but I would still like to hear from the pro's

Should we all wait a few months for the chrome lined 858 to arrive? (sry if I hijacked your thread:p)

Really? I have never heard that before myself. I wonder if there is some truth to it? I really can't see how one would be more accurate than the other?

VZ58L is non-rest and its chromed line bore , there is a few avail on EE but should you wanna wait till spring , marstar is being some more in.

how would chroming a non chrome bore work, wouldn't the plating lessen the inner diameter of the barrel causing bullets to stick or not even feed, and what about affecting the rifling:confused:

All good questions^. Hopefully an expert will grace this thread with his knowledge soon:D

Doing it would be one thing. Doing it without destroying accuracy would be another. Match barrels, in the past, have usually not been chrome-lined because of this potential detrimental effect on accuracy, even in carefully controlled manufacturing situations. (Having said that, it can be done. FN's precision rifles today use some chrome-lined barrels. But this precision would not be easy and it would not be cheap. If it was, your 858 would already be chrome-lined.)

Thanks that pretty much settles it for me. Can anyone explain why a chrome lined barrel is less accurate though?

In general, my understanding is this:

As mentioned, barrels to be chromed lined are actually made larger so that after being chromed they are the right diameter. For this reason, you cannot chrome line a non-chrome lined (retail) barrel.

A non-chrome lined barrel has tighter tolerances than a chrome-lined barrel which is why they are generally more accurate.

Chrome has a greater expansion and contraction range with change in temperature than steel.
The chrome bores are less tight for that reason , and since used mostly in military rifles, the bores can accomodate varying ammo lots as well.
Chrome also has a higher round count barrel life, possibly due to hardness and a cooler shooting bore from being looser.
Some non chrome 858 bores were being prematurely worn in Europe due to 30 rd mags being fired one after another non stop in competitions.
We dont have to worry with our puny 5 rd mags.
