Just bought a chrono a Beta Master Chrony any hints tips etc.. before I take it out for the first time.

Remember, the scope is higher than the bore. Take the time to line everything up and double check it before firing. Try and keep the sun away from the 6 and 12 o'clock position, sunny days require you to use the diffusers.

Really, they are very straightforward.

I've heard of people replacing the steel rods with wooden dowels. When you shoot the dowel it breaks - when you shoot a steel rod it tends to take your chrony down range with it.

The tip about direct sunlight is very true. Even with the diffusers it can be troublesome in the direct sunlight. Last time we were out and used my buddies we had to put a pop up tent over it cause it just wouldn't read

Use a tripod for the chrony. Just get a cheap one.
Have a pen and paper handy to record your numbers.
Play with the buttons and get used to the display options before you go to the range.
If you have a helper running and recording off the chrony, you can concentrate on your shooting.
If you buy the indoor kit (the overhead lights), and you pack all your shooting gear to the indoor range, be sure to bring your own extension cord and make sure you have a power outlet you can use.

Yep, learned that one the hard way. :( Those metal rods can transmit a lot of force into the chrony, which is only plastic and doesn't take well to that kind of abuse.

A couple weeks ago I was working with a recalcitrant muzzle device that threw bullets all over the place. I shot 3 of the 4 wood dowels and didn't cause one bit of damage to the chrony. All I am out is $2 for another bit of wood dowel.

I use the shooting Chrony Alpha Master with the remote readout that sits on my shooting bench,at least if you put a round through it it's not that much to get repaired.

If I'm using a scoped gun I bore site it first or lead a few extra rd. to sight it in before shooting over the chrono.

I also don't use the metal rods that came with the chrono I use the 12" or longer bamboo skewers I think I gave $2 for a pack of 100 still have around 90 after a couple year you hit a few now and then.

I made a plate to protect my chrono from 3/8" steel,I cut the angle iron so that it just sits about 1/4" above the electric eyes. I welded a nut onto the bottom so it will accept the mounting screw on a camera tripod and I can adjust the angel of the chrono if I'm not shoot in on flat terrain.

I also have the chorno strapped to the steel plate so if the angle of the sun is a problem and I'm not getting the proper shadow I can rotate the diffusers towards the sun.
