A friend of mine asked me to look at his CIL model 233 as it wasn't cycling properly. I took it apart and other than an unnecessarily complicated bolt system, I can't see anything wrong with it. I tightened a couple of the action retaining screws but no go. It will fire one, maybe 2 shots and then it seems like it isn't blowing the bolt back far enough to #### the action. This thing has 2 springs, one inside the other, and I'm tempted to cut a couple rings off to see if it'll then blowback far enough to ####. Before I do something that I might regret, any ideas or experience with this gun? Thanks in advance.

A CIL Model 233 is a Savage Model 25N. It's a bolt action. You sure about the model?
"...tempted to cut a couple rings..." Get that idea out of your head. Cycling issues with .22's are nearly always ammo related.

Sunray-
This is a semi-auto. The 85N like Winnipeg Toymaker said.
I've tried bulk Winchester, Rem. Thunderbolts and Golden bullets, as well as CCI minimags. Same problem with all.

Have a look and see if the chamber walls are smooth and rust/crud free , I had a 22 act like yours, turned out there was some pitting in the chamber and the fired cases where engraving themselves in the rust and slowing the action down .

It looks like what is called a "gill gun" because of the vent slots. it seems that the chamber may be worn enough that the blow by escapes and there is not enough recoil to recock....or the trigger system is worn enough that it does not catch the bolt on recoil. My bolt comes back and only slides forward when i release the trigger, kind of "hold open" feature.

I'll have a look at the chamber, too tight or too loose....
I don't think it's the trigger system, it doesn't appear all that worn, and it catches(cocks) firmly when the bolt is pulled back.
Thanks for the tips, keep 'em coming!

Yeah, I've already tried 'wet' and 'dry' firing. I didn't have time to do anything with it over the weekend, but I'll keep this thread updated, and an eye on it for any other tips.

Don't start cutting coils. There's something wrong somewhere. Remove all the parts except for the bolt in the receiver, and see how smoothly the bolt moves back and with how much force. Then put in the trigger group and try again. Maybe look for a buildup of crud in the trigger mechanism, causing something to stick and drag.
