clarification on different savage actions

trying to undersatand the physical differences between the model 10,11,12,14, and 16, savage actions. not sure exactly how to state what im looking for, but what i want is a list of physical differences in the actions.
such as; short action/long action, push feed/controlled round feed, bolt spacing, stainless/steel/other material, large shank/small shank
not looking for differences such as polished/ blued/ any other COATING,
and i dont care about stocks or bbls or sights, only interested in action differences. hope ive explained it well enoug! thanks
 
Man, if you think this is confusing now, just wait until you find the answer to your question!

Some time back, I was looking for similar info, and the Savage Shooters forum had a fairly good explanation. Savage has changed action lengths, screw spacings, center-feed vs. staggered-feed, left/right feed/eject etc. too many times to keep track. If you're looking to change your stock, good luck.
 
10 is short action and 110 is long. 11 is short and 111 is long. 16 short and 116 long. And so on. 16 and 116 are stainless. Some model 12 are stainless also, they are target/varmit action. Large shank are just on the WSM and RUM chamberings I believe. Can tell by serial number also. Accutrigger models are round topped recievers and pre accutrigger have flat top on back, so different bases. I have a couple 110's, a 10, 11, 111, 12, 116. All same basic action. Except the 110 in 338 L. It has a small ejection port.

thats kind of what i was looking for, however i have a 110, it is round front and back, but it's pre-accutrigger.

so basically they are all the same except for difference i mentioned in original post?
 
I copied this from another forum a while back when I was trying to find out what stock would fit what in regards to screw spacing. Clear as mud.

savage 110 were all one length when they first came out no matter what cartridge. as time went on they came out with an intermediate action with aprox a 4.5 spacing. then the true short action with a 4.25 spacing. 4.4 is still another new spacing

My bad. My 11 has no accutrigger and its round top front and back. But yes, the actions are basically all the same
 
Not to be argumentative, but they're not even close to being the same. Aside from the several different action lengths/screw spacings, the newer ones vary as to center-feed vs. staggered-feed magazines, and the location of the bolt release is in the process of being changed from the right of the bolt to a spot next to the triggerguard. If the question is being asked because the OP is thinking of re-stocking his gun, all these things can be important. The change from pre-accutrigger to accutrigger models was only one of many modifications that Savage has made to these actions, all of which can make it a PITA to get a new stock. Just check the website of one of the major aftermarket stock suppliers like Boyds...they go to great lengths telling you which specific Savage actions their products will fit.

IMHO this is one of the few advantages that the Rem700 has over the Savage bolt guns. Long action or short action...end of story.

Where did he say anything about changing his stock. And he asked about diffences in the " ACTION " not the magazines. I know there is staggered and centrefeed. I have both. And figuring out which stock to order is quite easy if you have any clue at all. Boyds for example, are blind mag stocks. You either have a short or long action, and either a staggared feed or centrefeed mag. It is harder to choose the color than which model you have.
 
My, my! I guess not being argumentative is more difficult in this case than I expected. He asked for differences in the actions...making it not unreasonable to think that it might be related to changing the stock. If so, I merely suggested that he be aware of a couple of things, so that he would "have a clue". Other differences, like the bolt release, were mentioned because I couldn't be sure exactly what info he wanted. Sorry if it pissed you off, Skavenger.

Judging by the fact that he specifically said that he doesnt care about stocks, I figured thats not what he was planning. And, I never claimed the OP didnt have a clue. Thanks for mentioning the bolt release. I failed to mention that varies on them.
 
To the OP, Savage catalog and "older" website has a list of the lettering vs what it means.

BUT, that only applies to the year of production of the catalog you are looking at. For the most part, the stuff and lettering carries over but there are quirks.

Then you look at the physical traits of the rifle and that will tell you lots.

First question I ask customer looking to play with these rifles is - Where is the bolt release?

Does the trigger have a tab?

Colour of the receiver?

Is there are detachable mag? If yes, where is the mag release? If no, can you tell if the mag box is attached to the receiver or separate?

Is there a step on the barrel in front of the barrel nut?

That pretty much narrows down what, where, when.
