The scope isn't capable of focusing on a target that close. Even with a parallax adjustment, 10 yards is too close for the majority of scopes at 10x zoom. I found mine was good from 50 yards and out as you have indicated.
 
Same, I just pulled one off of my Rem700 for a Vortex 4-16x44. Great scope, but fixed magnification gave it some limitations, although not much. I didn't even sell or trade as originally intended. I'm saving it to put on something else....whenever it comes up.
