Just completed a double Qualifier in Prince Rupert this Saturday and Sunday. As usual with this club, the matches were top drawer; interesting and challenging stages, lots of steel and a couple of swingers both days. Great bunch of guys and I met some young and very talented shooters. All good

But...... where are the Classic shooters? I know there are lots of guys out there with 1911's gathering dust in the safe :) But why aren't they suppporting "their" division.

In the Terrace Q's a couple weeks back there were only 3 of us and this weekend I was the only guy registered in CD.

I was talking to the Match Director for the Q's in Prince George ( June 2&3) and he tells me I am the only guy registered in CD so far!

So.... what gives? Where are the 1911 shooters?

Heck, we used to have guys shooting their single stacks in Standard but even they aren't coming out.

Is this the same story everywhere or is CD being better supported in other areas?

( In April I shot a double Q in the Lower Mainland and the turnout there was pretty good so maybe we just don't have the shooters in Northern B.C. to support another division)

AB IPSC is doing well in CD.
We had 9 single stack 1911 competitors in our last two qualifiers.
Lots of experienced guys too - so it's a tough division.

I'm not going to be surprised if CD doesn't turn out to be as popular as people first thought it would.

It's still relatively new, I still see guys signed up in Standard with SS 1911's and have people asking all the time about the new division. Most don't really comprehend it. Calling it classic instead of SIngle Stack like in the US probably hasn't helped.

Classic is like production without the minimum pull weight. With all the new guns out there you can pick up a Single Stack gun with all the important part for $1000 or less (Spartan) and run it as is...or add a mag well and tweak some of the parts and still stay fairly inexpensive without having to worry about getting bumped to Open...lol

I'm tossing the idea back n forths, seeing as I'm one of the guys who shot SS in standard for years, till 2-3 years ago... just still tossing the minor/major options before moving forward with it... leaning towards 9mm.. even though I have my .45 calling out to me. I'll be on the CD sign list soon.

Ok Rob you 1911 hater!:D

There was 6 of us shooting classic at the PoCo match last weekend out of 100 ish shooters. I had quite a few conversations which went like this - "oh you are shooting classic? I am thinking I will for such and such match coming up." Or "I am thinking of picking up a 1911 in 40s&w to shoot either major or minor" Will people will actually do this? Time will tell.

Classic in QC

with almost 12 match in the QC province since the new year
no match has more than 5 shooters so never was official

lots of people got their gear to shoot classic but i guess it's the fear of being put in Standard that put a hold on ambition

i'm planning a Classic ONLY match this fall so i think it will be the best option

as far as popularity
the new shooter have more choices now for less that 1000$
they can go Production or Classics
shooting 9mm in both case to keep it relatively cheaper

we will have to wait and see

the production division was not really popular at first and now it's the most crowded

Robs just upset CZ doesn't make a SS.

Give it time. I shot the two April qualifiers at Thompson in Classic and I would have done the same at the qualifiers this long weekend if I wasn't broken & needed surgery. As someone has said already, we may find more people trying Classic after this years Provincials. I plan on shooting the Island qualifiers in Classic. I don't mind if I end up playing by myself.

I believe Classic gives new competitors a cost equivalent alternative to production division for those who want to shoot a single stack 1911. To add, I still love my Shadow :D.

Absolutely correct. IIRC, there were two PD shooters at the 2000 Nationals (first Nats after PD was adopted), none in 2001, five in 2002 and under a dozen in 2003 (the first time there were enough to officially recognize the division).

By contrast, there are already 10 CD shooters (enough for official Lvl III match recognition) registered for this year's nationals; and it's been less than six months since CD has been adopted.

Yers, but Dan Wesson does! ;)

They also make a pretty decent Open gun based on a Caspian Hicap frame. I'd rather shoot that then a CZ 75 based open gun.

I think people who are worried about being put into SD are looking at it wrong.

First of all, if you are shooting 9mm-minor, you are not really at that big a disadvantage with a single stack in SD. I did it all last year and did ok. I won a few local matches and ended up #10 in SD for the year. Not bad for an old guy :) lol

Second if, as has happened to me, there aren't enough shooters in the match to recognize CD you just play in SD for the day and your match still counts for something. eg. Team Standing, Classification.

I look at it as a can't lose proposition :)
