I will soon be in possession of a shiney new Classic green. The pride and joy of my gun safe. I saw a Leupold Mk4 1.5x5x20 on an AR platform and man it looked good. I said thats the scope for my SAN, but I'm wondering if its a high enough magnification for shooting with precision out to 200-400 yards. I was told by the salesman that it should be good out to 700 yards, like I will ever shoot that far. Will 1.5x5 live up to the precision that this rifle is capable of.

700 yards is a bit far for that optic, plus its like looking down a tube. if you need to shoot that far look at a Nightforce 2.5-10 x 24 0r 32. or bigger I use a Nightforce 1-4 x24 on the carbine and am comfortable out to 400m. 1-4 or 5 is too little for the classics capability

OK I think a lot of those scopes are over rated you can get the same performance from a Bushnell elite 6500 2.5 x 16 by 42 ....better eye relief ( 6 inch) more rage of power and just as durable ...how can u beat it

I had a classic green with a Nightforce NXS 1-4 x 24. It was not enough magnification for that rifle. I up'd it to the Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 x 24 and it was perfect. Get a Larue 1.5 SPR LT-104 and you'll be in business.

I was hitting out to 700 with the 1.5-5 Leupold on my classic green carbine. It's a good scope and is capable of that, but that didn't stop me from putting the 2.5-10 Nightforce on it instead. I think it's a better scope for the capabilities of the rifle. If you don't plan on going past 400 then the Leupy would be fine, but I paid pretty close to the same for both scopes, so for my money the Nightforce is the better deal.

While I own that very scope you've mention, and feel it's a terrific bang-for-the-buck, in Yoda-speak: "A Nightforce, it is not."

Can you post a picture of the nightforce mounted on your rifle please? I have a Spectre DR on mine but was thinking of that scope too.

Thanks you for the input. Personally I doubt that I will ever do any shooting beyond 3-400 yards, but even at that distance I will want to be able to see in some detail my target. I will have to look at the Nightforce.

A picture would be nice also. If I'm putting a scope on a 3500.00 dollar rifle it has to look right to me also. Thats why I was looking at the Mk4. It looks right and bad, but I was doubting that it had power enough to compensate for my tired eyes.

that bushnell elite is a nice scope and will let you hit what you are aiming at. however, it won't keep zero like a night force and won't take the abuse. You reallly do get what you pay for. Good scopes are expensive for a reason. they really are worth the money, once you had one, you won't go back, EVER

I looked at the Nightforce 1-4 x24 and "settled" for the Leupold Mark
4 1.5-5x20 with illuminated SPR @ half the price. . . No regrets :)

The Leupold Mk 4 1.5-5x20 is also lighter and more compact than the Bushnell.

5x magnification is sufficient at ranges of 3-400 yards. Remember, the Palma match is shot with iron sights at 800, 900, and 1000 yards.

It may sound kind of silly, but I think varmint rifle type scopes with big objectives and high magnifications look out of place on a black rifle.

Some looks to consider for your green machine

The top photo is with the Leupy. I didn't think I had a picture of it with the Nightforce, but Big Red had one that I'd sent him. Sorry it's off my camera phone, so the quality isn't the greatest.
