Looking at buying my eldest a .17HMR, he’s young yet but thinking of getting a rifle he can keep forever, and be quality sixty years from now. Looking at a Winchester / Miroku or Cooper 57M, what else would you consider? Budget say $3500 but if I can do better like the Winchester low wall, good stuff. CZ’s on the easier but a little under the level I have in mind. I’m aware of Peter Hofer’s .17 double for classiest... I wish.

Wish i had a cool father like you when i was younger

I vote for the Cooper. A couple of christmases ago, I bought myself a Cooper in 22 lr. It will even shoot the cheap stuff into roughly half inch groups at 50 yards. It will do better with the more expensive ammo. I have not yet found the ammo with the magic lot number that will put it all into one hole but I will keep looking.

I don't know if this will be the last rimfire I buy, but it will take a lot to beat this one.

I'd vote for the Anschutz 1727F. It's an absolute beauty to shoot with.

And of course, you can't go wrong in dealing with Nordic Marksman!

Nordic are first class for sure. My vote would be for Cooper or Anschutz, I really don't think you could go wrong with either one. With the Cooper, you always have the option of getting one put together the way you like (time permitting). I'm mindful of how I used to plead with my dad to drive me to Canadian Tire (15 minute drive) to buy a tin of Bulldog .177 cal airgun pellets. I was younger than (I'm guessing) the OP's kid, but that pre-'77 Chinese air rifle was a "dream come to true" for me. You couldn't have convinced me a finer rifle existed in the world. lol

Annie or cooper. Cooper can add classic touches to like skeleton buttplate and grip cap. Amazing wood and even case colored reciever. Those options will likely put you over $3500 though

If your budget will allow it, my vote is for the Anschutz 1727f. I recently treated myself to one for my 50th birthday and could not be happier with it. Amazing rifle, incredible engineering, very accurate and unique enough to be an eye catcher at the range if that matters.

A used one can be had for about the upper limit of your budget. There's one for sale in the EE right now asking $3500. New will run you $4K plus.

If you really want to go over the top, Anschutz North America in the US does custom shop 1727f rifles with options such as Lilja barrels, cerakoting and select hand polished walnut stocks.

$3500, is that with optic/rings/extra magazine/gun case & sling/ ammo?

If so, the new T-bolt is a pretty nice rifle

If that's for the rifle only, Cooper all the way!
