Claybuster0175-12 Wad

I don't believe anyone around here stocks them. But Jerry at Mystic Precision has agreed to bring in a bag of 500 for me to try. I thought they might be good for skeet practice, but didn't want to make a bulk order until I was sure I would use them. I'd had a try at loading 3/4 oz using the WAA12L grey wad, but had some trouble getting consistent crimps. So, I kind of gave up on the idea and stuck with 7/8 oz loads. There seem to be good reasons to explore using light loads for practice. The amount of lead one loads really has an effect on how much it costs to reload for one thing. There's a sense of satisfaction that comes with getting good breaks with light loads too, and light recoil is another benefit.

They're still a bit of a rare item in the States, let alone here.

Pretty much the same as the 0178, except with a lump moulded into
the bottom of the shot cup to take up space. The few reports I've read
have been satisfactory for guys using WSL & Promo powder in both
AA's & STS's. A couple have stated they're O/U inertia triggers wouldn't
reset with 3/4 oz. loads.

I've tried 3/4 oz. 12 ga. Gamebore (2") loads and found them O.K. on Skeet targets,
but they were less than satisfactory for Trap or anything else much beyond 25 or
30 yards. A three-quarter ounce load just doesn't give much pattern density out at
35+ yards. (Maybe why 28's and 410's aren't all that popular for Trap (yeah, I know,
there's lots that like to play with their subgauges at Trap from time-to-time, and I've done it myself... but always return to the big gun )

With all the R&D that's been done on 24 gram loads and the wide range
of available components .... I think I'll stick with those ! For a factory load,
one of my favourites is the Kent "Velocity International" ... it's a 24 gram load
of 8-1/2's @ 1200. Some very impressive results at Skeet, Sporting, 5-Stand
and Trap, as well as effective on grouse & Woodcock. Minimal felt recoil.
Easy enough to duplicate with common components.

Checked today and where I get my wads in the US he has all kinds of them. Says they are starting to take off. $16.89 US per 1000 plus shipping etc. Next order of 28ga downrange I will get two bags of these to give them a try. If you want their info Fred drop me a PM. Another ugly color they are take care

Yup, your load info sounds about the same as what I've found so far BB. The 24 gram load at 1200 sounds is very close to the load I came up with for skeet practice too...7/8 oz (24 grams is 0.85 oz according to my converter and 7/8 is 0.875) at 1200 ft/sec. Just found a bottle of Promo I hid too (be honest Fred..."forgot"). I think I might try loading the 3/4 oz at 1250 as well as 1200, especially if recoil actuation can be a problem as well as pattern density. A bit more energy might be good for both. The heavier load might make for better ignition too, as pressures look quite low even with 7/8 oz at 1200 ft/sec. They still work though, just a bit more dust coming out of the barrel when cleaning.
