My only complaint with 231 is that I find it very dirty. Any recommendations out there for a suitable, clean burning powder for .40 S&W?

Thanks

Had the same complaint with 231. Switched over to Titegroup and been happy ever since. If yur shooting lead yur gonna get smoke no matter what but jktd stuff runs fairly clean.

Clays Universal is the cleanest I found. Very accurate with 180g lead SW at 900fs.

However, I've resorted to loading 40SW and 45ACP with Titegroup. A little, really does go a long way.

It's not the lead that smokes. It's the wax lube ring around the bullet.

Titegroup works well in them and does not seem to burn to dirty as for what i can tell.
Use it for 357. 38, 40 , 45acp, and 45 LC.
A little does go a long way as mentioned

For .40 I keep coming back to Power Pistol. But everbody's gun is a bit different. For my 1911 that is chambered for .40 Power Pistol is super clean, using 180 gr Frontier RNFP. I find it can have a bit more recoil than the faster powders, but it's not really a bother. If you're shooting it at late dusk, it does definitely have a bright muzzle blast.

Shooting outside i was using Tightgroup with lead and had no problems with it. Inside it was to smoky so i switched to Winchester Super Target and Zambni red lube. No smoke. WST is also used by the AMTU.

clean powder is a good idea...

I am also looking for my next powder, something cleaner than 231.
I need a new powder for 9mm.

It is not just the dirty gun.
Mostly is is the smoke in the face.

I have sucked up enough industrial pollution over the years to have a desire to avoid it with my hobbies and home life.

Has any body gone from 231 to WSF and found a big improvement???

What, you actually put powder in those things? By the amount of recoil they produce I thought they were primer powered;)

In all seriousness I can attest to the WST lack of smoke when used indoors.

I've used 231, Universal Clays and Titegroup in my .40

231 is filthy. Titegroup is better and uses the least powder. UC was the cleanest, but at lower loads I got unburned flakes (on the chronograph).

I am happiest with Titegroup so far.
