:confused:Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction if this has been covered before?

Looking for break down of the rifle and reassembly procedures.

What to lube, and what kind of lube is best?

Recently cleaned one for a friend and now he says the bolt won't close properly. He needs to bring it half way back and then slam it closed manually every shot.

I also installed a scope when I had cleaned it so I have to check the base screws to see if they are sticking through the top of the receiver.

But if this is not the case what gives?

I didn't take the bolt out but I though I had oiled it enough. I've also been told that to much oil isn't good either. Sooo

What to do?

Bernie

check to see if the arms are binding on anything on the inside of the forarm, the scope screws could do it aswell if they are only sticking through a little bit.
all that really needs oiling is the head of the bolt, the channels the bolt and arms slide in the reciever, and a little on the tube the spring is around.

It could very well be that the base screws are just the slightest bit too long, probably only one screw. I had the exact same problem, took off the millet base and filed a little off of one of the base screws. Back to normal.

Just a heads up for Rem autolauders. After cleaning the barrel it's a good idea to put a few rounds through the rifle to blow out any fouling that could have been pushed in to gas port. It's not uncommon for a "clean" rifle to jam on the 2 to 4th shot due to the crud that was inadvertantly pushed into the gas port partially blocking it. Better to have a jam on the range than in the field.

If you do a Web Seach putting in the make and model you will come up with some great sites for the Rem 742 - the sites will give you all the information you are looking for as well as the guns development and history - but I,d look at the scope screws for sure .

Check for chatter marks inside the action on the rails were the bolt rides you will see this at the front of the action were the bolt locks into the bbl. this occurs after a few years of shooting . Remington use to replace the receiver for free but they discontinued that practice . Oh by the way what happens is the bolt binds in these little detentes .

Well got the hang up fixed but I went to the range to try it today and every shot (5) the hammer wouldn't reset.

If its not one thing its another.

Going to have to look at the trigger group again. Maybe the return spring is hanging up or something.

Any suggestions?

you put the trigger mech back together wrong.
there are 2 little bars on the left side of the trigger mech that the one coming from the hammer needs to go under the one going to where the hammer is. switch those around and you should be good to go.

Favours for friends ... it's sometimes better to just say "No". :)

Maybe investment in a couple of manuals like Gun Digest's series
on Assembly/Disassembly ( Centrefire Rifles - Part IV and
Shotguns - Part V ) might help when you get your neck stuck out too far ?

How much do you think your buddy saved by not going to a gunsmith ?
How much have you now got invested into it ... in time ? fuel ? frustration ? ;)

I agree with the whole savings vs safety deal. Sometimes with the intricate workings of auto loaders you're better off to take it to someone with experience.

Didn't intend my reply to sound mean in spirit ... however with some of the most
obscure little intricacies of some guns, even a lot of experiance can not provide
the answers until you actually learn them.

My first exercise in frustration was taking a 6 speed motorcyle gear box apart and putting it back together. Figured if I could master a 4 speed Muncie close ratio box, what's the big deal with a motorcycle tranny ? Right ... wrong. Put it all back together,
Neutral, no sweat, dropped into first away we go. First, second third fourth, perfect,
NOPE No fifth or six. Took it all apart again. ONE gear, which could be installed either way was in the wong way. Only took three hours to solve, but either the factory manual or an experianced mechanic would have saved a lot of time & a bit of frustration. No money on this one ... but had I reallys screwed up ... a new gear box $$$$.

if you pm me with your e-mail addy, i can send you the 742 manual- i have it scanned in on this computer
