i have an older shotgun that was put away yeas ago with lots of oil. what can i use to remove the old sticky oil and loosen up the action

I just use hoppes9. Take the whole thing down and give it s good scrub. Re oil and wipe dry then reassemble. Good to go

To remove 'wad plastic' I use a bit of steel wool on an old 12g brush with some Hoppes #9. Spin the rod on a low speed drill for ca 10 sec and it shines ! This would work for dried up oil cra* too. Oil well after.

I recall a note that Ed's Red (a traditional cleaning solution) could be mixed up without the acetone if you weren't cleaning plastic out of shotgun barrels, from which I infer that this is a key ingredient if that's what you do want to do.

Open the action over some cardboard or newspaper and blow a can of brake cleaner down through the action letting all the gunk run down thru. Never saw need to tear down unless really gummed up.

Lacquer thinner... lots of it... air hose... lots of it... repeat. Then varsol or G96 and air... but lacquer thinner first.

Keep the wood out of it...
