Hi guys, I am in the process of getting my first stainless rifle, my question is as follows- does it take longer and more work cleaning a stainless rifle than a blued rifle? I would appreciate your responses.
i just wipe mine down with a lightly oiled rag now and then and none have rusted yet. honestly i think that i am over-maintaining my stainless guns but old habits are hard to break.
a while back i posted a thread asking people if they have managed to rust stainless guns and the experts warned that the worst thing for making stainless steel rust is rubbing it with or having carbon steel (non-stainless) residue on it. the carbon steel rusts and the rust just transfers over to the stainless and rusts your gun.
so with that in mind, dont go to work on it with a carbon steel wire brush or steel wool or something
over-maintaining in terms of bore cleaning isnt good - ive seen some peoples guns that were worn more from cleaning than from actually firing.
but yeah i know what you mean - sometimes i stop in the middle of wiping down my stainless rifles with an oily rag and think 'wtf am i doing?' but end up doing it anyway. i suspect they wouldnt rust even if i didnt keep them oiled, but id rather be safe than sorry
