Cleaning the gas tube ain't neccesary. If you do need to clean it, the best you can do is ultrasonic cleaning but buy a new one would only cost you about $15. There is also http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1544/Product/AR_15_GAS_TUBE_CLEANERS, but again, it would cost probably less to buy a new one
Just for kicks and giggles, once a year or so, I give the gas tube a blast of aerosol Brake Cleaner (Cambodian Tire, etc). I attach the little red tube on the white hold down button and stick the red tube into the rear of the gas tube... Then (with safety glasses) I let a blast down the tube.
Does it work ? Darned if I know! I never experience anything but great reliability from my black rifles!
Like others have said not necessary, the use of pipe cleaners and other swabs is definitely not recommended as it can leave lint in the tube. Leave it be , replace the gas tube when just under over half of it turns blue/black on the outside.
