how do you do it without a washing machine(if i did id be the one hung out to dry),so what are the effective alternatives.

I usually just put them in a sealed container with some sort of soap and just shake it up real good, then rinse it and let it air dry.

You can use a washing machine, just put it in a sock and tie the end of the sock off tight.

i just cleaned it by putting it in some hot water in a plastic container,then i added dish soap and a good amount of bleach and mixed it around for about 10 min.all the crud floated to the top and the bore snake was clean as ive ever seen it.the crud stuck to the side of the plastic container when i drained it,i had to wipe the hole container down,i that would have gone in the wash my clothes would have a nice coat of sticky hard to remove crap.washing machine not recommended

I know a guy who cleans his (in a sock as well) in his dishwasher.
Puts his baseball caps in there to clean them too !

 

[safety first]

Using the same machine to clean lead and wash your families food dishes may be problematic.
