How critical is it to have your brass clean and shiny before reloading? I have just joined a cowboy action group and I am reloading 45 colt and 38 special with a Dillon 550 c/w carbide dies. I tumble my brass with a polish in the medium, then spray the brass with lubricant, reload, and clean the lubricant off with solvent. I enjoy this process however when I start competing I may not have time to be so particular. Any tips would be welcomed. ie: is lubricant really necessary with carbide dies or does it just make it easier and extend the life of your dies?

First off, you really don't need lube for shorter revolver cases when you are using carbide dies. I know some like to give the cases a light spritz to ease the pressure required for resizing, but it isn't necissary.

I like to make sure my brass is very clean and shiny is just a fringe benefit. Corn cob is great. Walnut is better for scouring, but it's the corn that absorbs the dirt and dust.
