looking for any advice on tumbling brass. I use corncob media and some stuff called FLITZ polish. The problem is the fine dust seams to collect inside the brass. It gets so much in there sometimes it cant even be removed by washing it out with water. No to mention how much of a pain in the ass washing each piece of brass is. Is my corncob media to old? is my polishing media that i'm adding causing the dust problem, Funny thing is that i just bought some new walnut media and it has some kinda red polish on it. This stuff seams to get dusty and collect as well. The red residue inside the case is so bad that after washing three times it was still red in the case neck!!! any suggestions???? how bad is this dust if you leave it in there. Will it burn up with the gun powder??? will it burn dirty or not burn at all and leave behind an abrasive substance in the gun barrel????

cleaning brass

I use a vibratory tumbler with walnut shell media and a tbs. of Brasso....nice shiny brass and if there is any dust it is minimal and not a concern..

I use a squirt of liquid car polish myself, to rejuvenate old media.
Sounds like you are using too much of the Flitz. You don't need to add it every time, just when you feel the media is not doing it's job.
As to the dust, as long as the outside of the case is wiped down, and nothing falls out of the inside, it should be fine to shoot.
I say wipe the outside down, because you don't want any sort of lubricating effect in the chamber of your rifle, nor do you want any abrasives.

just put the dryer sheet in this mornign auctually. Thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a try

Just as a note. I had to pick up a couple of items in Princess Auto last evening.

They had a big sign at the door that they are now carrying crushed walnut shells . I did not have a chance to look at it or get a price though. Next time I go in if it a good price I will buy some.

.... I'm using "Lizard Litter" from my local pet store. It's Crushed Walnut shells, and much cheaper than elsewhere, cheap enough that I don't think twice about throwing it out when it's dirty . LIQUID CAR WASH does work, as does the BRASSO, and any damage to cases is minimal, and not worth bothering about. The DRYER sheet works well too, but I usually seem to forget, to grab a sheet ,when I go past the Laundry room into the workshop ! ..... David K

I use a dryer sheet but I use the abrasive compound polish from RCBS in the little dime bag packages. I do use corn and always manage to get a brilliant smooth to the eye and touch finish. When I remove my cases from the media I shop vac them and inspect to make sure no corn cob media is jammed in the primer hole. Wouldn't worry too much about the red coloring in the case unless it starts to effect your dies and or bullet accuracy.
Often 'Walnut Media' is intermixed with Pecan Shells which will rub off as red or orange on the brass, but it is just a natural stain. It is pretty tame compared to the aggressive bore cleaners offered today. If Hoppe's solvent cant remove it, you might have a problem but that stuff can clean anything.
Hope this can shed some light on this for you.

I would drop the brasso. It does contain amonia which is hard on brass. NuFinish liquid car wax is the same stuff I am sure as the Dillon polish and is just as effective at a fraction of the cost. Love the used dryer sheets. They soak up a lot of gunk.

Take Care

I use corncob and the Lyman rejuvinator stuff. Soon as I get dust I dump about twice as much as they reccomend into the cob and let it run with the lid off for about an hour and then let dry overnight. Works great, even doing a pretty good job on the primer pockets.

Crushed walnut shell
Turn on the tumbler
Add brass
Add NuFinsh liquid car polish/wax, or whatever they call it until the speed of the moving media starts to slow down a bit. In my Lyman Turbo 1200, that amounts to about a cap full. Add as drops, not one giant glob of it.

Absolutely zero dust. Brass comes out perfect.
