Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is corrosive and traps moisture. I use it as a bore soak for neglected rifles. Keep it off the furniture and your skin. You might want to use methyl hydrate afterwards, to remove residue.

An excellent general purpose bore cleaner that will remove powder fouling AND metal fouling is carb cleaner, available at the auto parts store.

Wet patch and let it soak for an hour, then repeat. I leave rifle muzzle down on a pad of paper towls and keep claenaing until muzzle does not leave a gungy deposit.

Lightly lube, afterwards.

I've heard about the break cleaner too but have never tried it. After expiramenting with quite a few gun cleaning products, I've found that BoreTech's Eliminator is superior to em all. For powder, Pb & Cu Eliminator cleans all. It beats everything else I know of, including sweets for Cu. Might not work on brakes though ;).

Most carb cleaners are a mix of alcohols. Read the labels.

Brake cleaner is usually perchloroethylene, a great degreaser. If you look at products like Birchwoood Casey's, Gun Scrubber, it is just perchlorethylene, brake cleaner is much cheaper.

GM Cleens Sp?

An excellent general purpose bore cleaner that will remove powder fouling AND metal fouling is carb cleaner, available at the auto parts store.

Wet patch and let it soak for an hour, then repeat. I leave rifle muzzle down on a pad of paper towls and keep claenaing until muzzle does not leave a gungy deposit.

Lightly lube, afterwards.

Its been said that GM Cleens is similar to Shooter's Choice bore cleaner. You can get it at a GM dealer's parts counter. Get the liquid bottle/can, not the spray. It's a lot cheaper than dedicated bore cleaner. Add about 5% oil, or Hoppes if you like the smell.

In the army I used break cleaner instead of that CLP/Break Free stuff the army supplied me with. Worked much better. Can't offer a scientific explanation as to why, but after the rest of the section saw me using it, they went out and bought some too. For what it's worth.

Be careful with some of the brake cleaners - they will MELT plastic faster than anything you can imagine.

There are usually two kinds of brake cleaners - get the one that's 'safe for ABS sensors', and I think that's the less melty of the two. :)

Make "Ed's Red" bore cleaner. A good homemade version of Hoppes.

1 part acetone
1 part Automatic trans fluid
1 part kerosene
1 part mineral spirits (paint thinner, Varsol)

Buy 1 litre of each at Wal-Mart and you have a life time supply.

FWIW modern brake cleaners and carb cleaners are acetone, trichlorethylene, methyl alcohol, toluene or a combo. The older brake cleaners used methylene chloride or 1,1,1 Trichloroethane, which is great, but bad for the ozone layer.
