I've got a couple of older rifles that I've taken apart and found lots of caked up "grunge" under the action, where the action meets the stock etc. Just wondering what people use to get that sort of stuff off. Tried a toothbrush and soap but that was no good. Any ideas?

Thanks

Break Clean seems to be a pretty good metal cleaner. If the stock has lots of build up in the recesses of the bedding I would attempt to brush it out dry or use high pressure air if you have access to that. You could use dental pics to remove hardened material but you must be carful not to damage the inletting with more aggressive tools.

"...lots of caked up "grunge" under the action..." On the stock or the receiver?
You need to give the solvent time to work.
For the receiver, take the stock off, drop the whole thing into a tub of varsol and leave it there for 24 hours.
For the stock, use any wood cleaner, but leave it on for an hour or so. If you're refinishing the stock, drop it in the varsol for 24 hours too.

Varsol is the same as Mineral Spirits right? I'll soak it.

Most of the grunge is on the receiver where the stock touches it. Some under the tang too.

Yep. It's the Canadian Brand name. Totally unknown as that Stateside. You'll find it in Crappy Tire's paint department.
