how many pounds of cleaning media do i need to start off with in my new tumbler? and what do you suggest walnut for clean corn cob for polish?

If you didn't get a bag of media with your tumbler, go to a pet supply shop. Crushed corn cob is sold as small pat bedding. Less than $20 for about 18 kilos.
How much you need depends on the size of the tumbler. About half full will do nicely.
Brass needs to be clean, not shiney.

Walnut shell is also sold at pet stores as Reptile Litter or Bird Litter.

I get my walnut media in 50lb bags from a local building supply store.

Depending on how often and how much brass you are cleaning your media requirement will be based on that.

depending on where you live, the pet store for ground walnut shell is almost impossible, i tried ever pet store around and came up with squat. best place is princess auto, 50lb bag for like 30 bucks, some times they have it in stock, sometimes not. just get them to order you in some from the catalog.

and you can use just ground walnut shell? you dont need to use the corn cob? i don't really care for shinny i just want it clean. and i heard to put in used dryer sheets to keep the media clean?

ok has anyone else heard of white rice i was just scrollin through the internet n heard ppl using white rice???? i think i'll stick with walnut or corn cob whatever i find first lol

Don't waste your time and money on wrong media and power bill....

Use waltut shell and a cupful of Nufinish.

I tried it all, Tarn-X, vinigar, dish soap, corn cob...

2-4 hrs with crushed walnut shell and Nu-Finish works wonders; depending on your tumbler.

do you do that once together or first just walnut then after add the nu-finish?

If you are in the Vancouver, BC area, i can give you enough walnut media for your tumbler. Walnut works for me and lasts practically forever. I just add a little from time to time to make up for the media that is powdered and lost.

You can also get plastic beads for tumbling from Bedrock Supply in Edmonton. The advantage of these is that you don't have to replace them like walnut or corncob media; just wash with soap and water when they get too dirty and they're good to go again.

I've used walnut and currently use corn cob from a pet shop. But when my current bag of corn cob runs out I'll go back to using bulk, long grain rice.....

For what amount to about 50¢ worth of walnut, I couldn't be bothered with the dryer sheets. Also, after you break a few decapping pins, you won't think rice is such a great idea either.

To all you guys that can't find walnut, check out any abrasives supply places. Walnut is sold as sand blasting media as well as pet litter.

easyrider604 thnx for the offer but i'm in ontario. yea i think i'll go get me some walnut maybe throw in some polish once my brass starts lookin dull.

Manus Abrasives on Golden Drive (just off United Blvd. in Coquitlam here in BC but also in Mississauga) A 50 lb. bag of med. walnut is about $22.00.

I don't know what 'peek' polish is but Nu-finish 'once a year car polish' works for me.
I turn the tumbler on with media in, pour a cupfull spreading it evenly, let it run for 5 mins and then dump brass in. 2-3 hrs of tumbling and I get brass clean and looking new.

Bought 5 quarts of Zilla lizard bedding (walnut shell) 2 years ago, still have some left and reloaded 10K or so. Well, I had 946ml Powerade bottle full of de-capped primers...
