cleaning media

princess auto sells ground walnut shell :) i'm juss gonna call n see if there in stock. and i still need to buy a tumbler :s

My friends and I are wanting to buy some crushed walnut in bulk, at a sandblasting supply store. What size crushed walnut should we be looking at buying?

I like using walnut ( lizard litter ). I resize and de-prime before I tumble and walnut doesn't get stuck in the flash holes like corn cob. Add a capfull of nu-finish car polish and you have some shiney brass.

The medium grit walnut media (from ecoshell.com) that I got from Manus Abrasives is 12/20 grit, which is between about .065" and .036". This is fine enough not to clog up the necks of bottleneck cases (I tried .222 Rem) although it sometimes does stick in the primer flash holes if the brass is deprimed first. That's what they said they are asked for for polishing brass cases.

They don't stock the coarse grit (at least here)- it is 8/12, which is about .10 to .065". They do have Fine (20/40, or about ..036" - .016") but I'd guess that may be too gentle.

so what happens when you arent thinking, you purchase a crap load of corn cob, chuck it in the tumbler and now all your shells are packed full of cob thats darn near impossible to get out? i tried tumbling with no media but this is hit and miss to empty out the cartridges. ideas?

I bought the turbo tumbler with auto flow and it came with some corn cob media and I emptied the whole thing in there. It's pretty full and I do about 100 pieces of .223 at a time and it comes out nice and clean after a couple of hours. If there is a chunk in the flash hole I give it a poke with a small precision screw driver. Works good for me.

223 by chance. pick it out is about the only way.

I received a bag of CC with my tumbler and it took days to clean the brass. Plus the cartridges were filling with CC dust. Tried walnut and cleaning is way faster with a lot less dust. I put used dryer sheets in the tumbler to collect some of the dust that is produced.
