I recently bought an M38 Swede and started cleaning it. I ran Sweet's 7.62 through it yesterday about 6 times and cleaned out all the copper fouling. Today I ran G96 compete gun solvent through it and got a really brown patch (I've gotten a lot of black patches but never brown).

Anyways, I figured it would be a good idea to ask here. What should I be using to clean out this old barrel? I've got Hoppe's #9 and the G96 and regular gun oil. I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks!

i use boiling water, works like a charm, the bore will shine after using water alone, yet theres still alot of crud in the grooves.

yet with boiling water my bore-cleaning time is cut in half.

but im not sure if you have a "special" bore condition with the brown patch.

I've heard Wipout foaming bore cleaner works well, I have yet to find some in my neck of the woods. I've also tried an Electrochemical setup with good results.

I ordered it on-line from:

The Reloaders Bench (Ontario) .. (click here)http://www.reloadersbench.com/

WIPE-OUT ™ BRUSHLESS BORE CLEANER (click here)http://reloadersbench.com/wipeout.html

Used it once on an old milsurp so far.... sure was a lot of blue patches coming out of the bore afterwards, that weren't coming out before I used it. :D

Badger

Thanks for the advice guys; I'll have to look into the Wipeout bore cleaner. Looks better than the dripping/stinking Sweet's!

I did a couple patches with the Hoppes #9 and the bore is cleaning up nicely...and no more brown patches...just that first one. The grooves are starting to shine and it's not nearly as dirty as I thought it was. :)

I have a mildly pitted milsurp barrel that I've been "cleaning" for days now, I actually tried Brasso with a nylon brush and scrubbed the bore. I was amazed at what came out. Anyone else try this?

i would't use brasso ,or any fine abrasive myself.generally i don't like brass brushes either. if you have noticed ,cleaning anything with brasso leaves fine scatches behind[wear].i'm not critizing anyones methods here, i just personally don't like using abrasives to clean most things.

I have used chrome polish once to clean up a severely abused and pitted milsurp barrel(fired corrosive and left to sit for 10 years!). It certainly cleaned it up nicely as a last ditch effort, but it's not something I would do except under dire circumstances...

Yeah, just buy a little spout and pour the boiling water from the chamber to the muzzle. I use the same process after I shoot corrosive ammo.

For real bad bores, I have used a homemade electric bore cleaner like someone mentioned above. You wouldn't believe how much crud those things will take out of your bore. Here are instructions to do it:

Make sure you don't leave the ammonia in the bore too long or it will start to have an adverse effect on your bore.
