Just getting my Hornady Lock n Load AP set up and they recommend cleaning all the powder drop components with a Hornady product to get rid of the lube that it was packaged with. Can I just use a brake clean product and let it dry before using?

Thanks

Here is a video from Hornady on cleaning their dies when they are new. I would tend to think that these procedures could likely be applied to cleaning their presses.

I've used 99% isopropyl alcohol in liberal amounts to degrease the unit. The powder measure was one part that would always get powder sticking to it. I used the fabric softner trick and the Hornady dry lube, no luck. I ended up using a steel brush on my Dremel and removed the paint from the inside of the powder measure funnel area, polished it to a shine and then treated it along with the metering assembly and inner walls of the plastic tube for the measure with paste wax. Now it's slick as dawg sh!t on a wet lawn and resists rusting.

Any type solvent that will not effect plastic, paint, rubber etc. will work fine, the problem you will have is with the bare metal parts and rust once the preservative is removed.

And bare metal parts can be "waxed" to add a moisture and air barrier. The metal parts of museum firearms are waxed also for the same reason. (and your car)
;)

I just grab the Meguiars mag and aluminum polish out in the garage to remove any sign of the start of corrosion on my press and dies.

Naphtha (Coleman fuel) is also an effective cleaner / degreaser and what Remington uses in their brand of "action cleaner ".

Yup go at it..

I'm sorry sfdj....that shyt's funny;)

During WWII and after our American submarines used a "special" hydraulic oil with a high alcohol content in our torpedoes. The sailors would strain the hydraulic oil through a loaf of french bread and then drink the "Torpedo Juice".

As soon as silverfoxdj made his comment about using 100% ISO Alcohol my devious mind went to work.
