I need to find a better way too clean my mil surps, better products better rods, better brushes, now ive taught all of the stuff i know too my self, i use the cabelas 45 doller all in 1 kit, for my solvent i have been using gun scrubber, and rem oil, and patches, havent gone too a boor snake yet( are they worth it?) so my questions are am i using ####ty stuff, any better cleaning products i could use (and where can i purchase them im in winnipeg so i know of 2 places wholesale sports and cabelas) and i bought a mosin recently and it came with a black strap... red harring or normal?

Wipe-out foaming bore cleaner is by far the best I product I have used and all you need is a rod and patches. For rods I use the coated Dewey rods and find they work great.

The dollars don't really matter.

What really matters is whether or not you know how to use the equipment you have.

I'm still using a pull-through and a 4x2 and old-fashioned Hoppe's Number 9 and I'm getting by. Bore gets fouled I use PH brush on a British pull-through which was made when I was 15 years old.

Works.

I clean all my milsurp with their original cleaning kit. thoses kit were used for decades to clean theses old war horses and i see no reasons to not use them and its a pleasure to use the issued kit,i'm a nutz:D. As bore cleaner, i use Barnes CR10 because i have some but i want to try Wipe Out foam cleaner when i will have the chance.

Just got 2 X Wipeout (Patchout), 2 X Accelerator, JB bore paste and JB bore bright last night in the mail from Browell's. They can ship these as they are only liquid and not classified as a hazardous material as the aerosol foaming wipeout. Got sick of trying to find it all available in Canada at the same store! We need a Brownell's in Canada!!!

It worked VERY well on my just shot Lee Enfield No.5!! Can't wait to get to try it on some old milsurps that, I think are as clean as I can get them, to really see how it works.

Here is the break down if anyone is interested:

May I suggest suggest greasing the bore with a nylon brush immediately after firing the last round while the barrel is still hot. this will help the carbon from hardening up and oxygen from gettiing to the steel and copper.

Use a jag and patch to remove the grease before next firing or cleaning with solvents.
One piece rods are best along with using care not to scrap the bore with them.

Foam bore cleaner - spare the rod and spoil your bore. ;)

Below foam bore cleaner after firing 50 rounds and no brushing.

On top of this a frosted and pitted milsurp bore will "eat" your copper bore brush and leave a false copper reading in your barrel. When a application of foam bore cleaner comes out with no black carbon or blue copper you bore is clean. ;)

For a throughout cleaning at home Ed's Red and a one piece rod. Old T-shirt cut up for patches. I've just added some Sweets 7.62 to get ride of 60 years of copper.

For a quick wipe down at the range I use G96 and a bore snake. Then follow up with the items above when I get home.

Good ol eds red for me.

Not only can you use it for seized up locks but does serious work on bores. Sans copper of course. Ive got to try that foam stuff though. if I can get my hands on some.

I wouldnt use rem oil. I saw a study somewhere that the rem oil allowed more rust to occur than using other lubes. Thinned ATF works great and is super cheap.

In terms of rods and brushes, what you have will work fine. I prefer to use a 1 peice rod. Pull through is preference. But due to the long legnth of my milsurp barrels, pull throughs take too long for me.

I do not reccommend using the cleaning supplies that come with the milsurp rifles. Since most are rods not coated with anything or are not made of soft metal they have the potential to ruin your barrel. Also some cleaning kits like the mosins are meant to clean from the muzzle. This is not a good practice as all the gunk goes into the mag and action. If you dont care about your milsurp or you are extremely careful you can do this, but there are better options to look into.

im i weird or ruing my rifles if i said i was using CLP?

Nah. I used CLP on all my guns; milsurp, AR, shotgun alike. That was until I discovered froglube. Now I use that exclusively unless I am trying to bring back a worn milsurp barrel, that's hoppes and a lot of elbow grease. Then froglube from then on.

Maybe I'm the weird one. :ar15:
