I have been finding it extremely tough to push my cleaning rod through my barrel. After I pull the rod out the attachments are always loose as well. What is going on? does anyone else have this problem?

thanks

John

The cleaning rod should be relatively hard to push through with patches and slightly easier with a brush. Thats what does the cleaning and scrubs the bore.

As far as the attachments loosening it is because the rifling of the barrel is spinning the attachment as you push it through. This is why most cleaning rods have a handle that allows the rod to spin freely.

Cleaning rods are not meant to be pushed through, they are meant to be pulled through! On your rod you will have right hand threads for the rod segments and the attachments, this coupled with the right hand twist of the rifling= things coming undone when it's pushed. If it is pulled through, your right hand twist of the rifling and the right hand thread of the cleaning rod will work together to keep everything tight while you are cleaning! Good luck!

awesome, thanks mlehtovaara, I though I was doing something wrong. Although my rod does have the free spinning handle and it still comes loose, so that is normal though?

Wow, I wonder how many millions of people have been doing this wrong all these years:rolleyes:

My smaller Dewey rods do this. They are flexing as they go down the bore and this prevents them from turning. Check your rod and be sure that it is not actually bent as well.
I just checked my .22 cal rod and it had a bow in it.

Don't think my patch will stay on it's jag very long like this!:p

Pulling a cleaning rod full of lead particles and carbon build up from the bore down into my action just seems like a bad idea to me! And if your pulling from the bore end I can imagine the crown of your barrel could get beat up pretty easy. No thanks!

Should be snug .
Just make sure you have the right size jag , rod & patch.
My dewey rod also loosens. Might be the useless boreguide and I,m pushing the rod down the barrel. :)

I prefer pull to push myself. If you are pulling the rod stays straight, if pushing it bends in the barrel rubbing rod on rifling/etc. I can almost guarantee if you clean the appropriate amount (not over cleaning) and use brass ends on a carbon fiber rod (like my tipton) you wont be able to wreck your crown if you tried. pull from breech to muzzle, don't use pointy jags. problem solved. also get new cleaning rods. if your rod becomes unscrewed in the barrel, you wont be having a good day any longer.

Either way the the cleaning rod will be touching the crown, unless your using the guide which will eliminate the problem!

Pulling through from the breech to muzzle is what I was taught in the military! The military way far from makes sense most of the time, but in this case I would say they know best when it comes to weapons handling!

I just bought an Otis kit, which pulls patches/brushes only, and I am happier doing that. You just don't have to worry about your crown then, and there is no need for a bore guide.
