Hi, looking for advice on cleaning plastic from sabot rounds out of
A) rifled 12 ga barrel
B) smoothbore 12 ga barrel
C) modern rifled muzzleloader
I was thinking some foaming bore cleaner, due to its ease of use, ie letting it soak.
Or, making up a batch of Eds Red, there are several recipes for this, looking for opinions on recipe also.
Yesterday I was told brake cleaner is perhaps the best way, but how easy would it be to not get it all over the camp finish, thus wrecking the camo print?
Thanks in advance.

The active ingredient that removes the plastic is Acetone. It will take off the finish as well. Ed's Red has acetone in it. I find the best method is to use a bore snake when the barrel is still warm.

If it is like wad plastic I use wd40 which seems to work well. I've never shot sabots though... I soak a patch in wd40, run it down the bore and let it sit for a few minutes then repeat. Usually by the third patch all of the plastic has loosened and comes out.

Acetone. Ed's Red also has acetone. You don't need to pour a gallon into your barrel, just a wet swab or patch to pull through.

I have never tried this with a rifle or muzzle loader: the following has worked very easily (two times gets it all) to remove plastic from sabots and wads trying .410 in a stainless Taurus Judge.

I have success with a stiff nylon bristle brush on a rod that you can control the rotation: remove the barrel (or receiver plug for muzzle loader) and go from muzzle to receiver end so you are reversing the direction it went into the barrel. With the rifled barrel try to match the rate of twist of the rifling, smooth bore doesn't matter.

I claim no responsibility for the opinion, but it works in my scenario.

I agree with shooters choice it works great on wad plastic and I also chuck a rod into the drill and power scrub it, keeps my cowboy gun extracting fast.
