I picked up a brick of russian surplus 22lr ammo last week and boy is it greasy. I don't want the grease gumming up my 10/22 actions or magazines so I was wondering if anyone has tried de-greasing them. I was thinking about brake-clean but don't know if it will cause misfires or not.

No experience with Russian stuff. But I have used top of the line Lapua Midas and Eley Tenex ammo. It has a very heavy wax/grease like coating, and shoots the lights out. So, you may want to try them for accuracy, before you take the grease off.

Russian rimfire

someone offered me some old Russian rimfire ammo several years ago and I decided not to buy it because it was steel cased 22 ammo not brass. I did'nt think it would be to healthy for my fireing pin . hold a magnet up to a round and see if it sticks .

Steel case "junior" russian 22lr was no problem and never gave any mechanical problems, the grease was distinctive and produced fail to extract/eject on first couple of rounds, after that ran perfectly. Had the same FTE for first couple of rounds on switching back. Don't clean off the grease, you will encourage leading. If it really bothers you put it out in the sun for half an hour, the grease will wind up in the bottom of the box as long as the rounds are oriented point down.

I tried it out tonight, it seemed to work ok. I paid $15 for a brick at a local gun shop. It didn't feed in my match chamber 10/22 but worked fine in my stock barrel one. Gophers won't be able to tell the difference.
