I'm reading "Door to Door - David Belavia" (It's a first hand account of the start of the Iraq war) right now and somewhere in the first part of the book he mentions that he made his troops "clean the ammunition so that the guns are less likely to jam".

Does the military recommend this? I've never cleaned ammo, but like I said, this book seems credible.

Yep, for functionality. I think he says they cleaned 1200 rounds that night before the battle.

BTW.. Amazing book, when your done, pick up Fifteen Days by Christie Blatchford. Thats another AMAZING read.

X2

I read it while I was over there. Very well written.

I also had to clean some ammo while in country. I took a header into some Afghan mud (it was the rainy season) while on patrol. That crap is like glue. It jammed the linkage on my ammo belt real good.

Some IPSC guys I know polish & clean all their ammo before matches.

A good example of why not to do it. I know IPSC guys that run around with little bags on their guns while 'holstered' to keep a couple of rain drops off them.

"Should we then just get oil all over our ammunition? No, of course not. There is no need to court disaster. I will continue to keep my ammunition as dry as possible."

Direct quote from the fellow who determined that WD40 won't penetrate primers on (some) ammo.
I noticed he used factory ammo with a primer sealer. I wonder if he would get the same results with handloads?

ive had to brush off some ammo in the feild after it falls in the mud/sand while unloading your rifle:mad:

i don't think id risk it using wd-40 if it gets into the primers it will kill them plus i dont kno why you would need ammo THAT clean:confused:

We (UK) were taught to wipe each round as we loaded it in the magazine and also to empty mags every day if possible.

don't use any ammonia based cleaners. When in school, we were doing some corrosion labs, and some Germans were experiencing catastrophic case failureS. Ammo got wet and exposed to ammonia . Brass does not like. Stress corrosion cracking can be a #####.

Back to WD-40. We were taught NEVER to lubricate cases as it had the potential to cause pressure problems as it changed the way the case "gripped" the chamber upon firing. My MWO wouldn't have BSed me, would he?

Lubricating cases has always been bad but for logistical reasons. You shouldnt really load wet ammo as that can change chamber pressures but then so can lots of things, clean brass is less likely to stick or fail on firing!
