Hi All,

New to the forums, and relatively new to shooting.

Just wondering what people use for cleaning. I see kits ranging from 20-80 dollars.

Do you need to spend big bucks in order to get a good, fairly complete cleaning kit?

I've seen those zombie gun cleaning kits. Not falling for the marketing, I'm wondering if this kit is complete enough to be worth the higher price. I have a .22 and a 9mm currently.

What are you all using?

Thanks,

Any recommended kits out there? Or are they all the same? Looking for a kit that I can clean my SKS and my HK45, possibly a 12 gauge once I purchase one.

Just look for something with brushes in your caliber and extra tips for patches, maybe a carbon fibre cleaning rod on top of the standard 3 piece kit rod.
You can then look at different cleaners/lubes, etc, which everyone has their favorites. I like the smell of the G96 stuff, and being lazy an all in one cleaner/protectant works for me

Heh the $25.00 gunslick blue box cleaning kit that I purchased 5 years ago is still going strong and I use it at least twice a month

I have an Otis cleaning kit, I think it was $40 an extra 20 at my local shop...
Covers everything from .22 up to 12, paid an extra 6 for oil with a nice needle tip style applicator.

I don't think you need to get up to $80, I'm new to shooting as you are, only thing I'd like would be nylon brushes instead of the brass or whatever the hard bristles are, but that's from what I've read not experience. I've heard they can scratch barrels, again from reading not experience.

cleaning kit is one of those things you tend to "accumulate" over the years- first you get a basic-then you add to it as needed- different jags, mops, and brushes, depending on your degree of "laziness"to change heads- to start off, if you don't want to damage your precious guns, dump the sectioned aluminum rods and GET A DEWEY - actually 2 deweys- the 22 and the 30 cal- the sectioned are all right for a quick through field kit but that's it- as for your shotgun- look at a REAL shotgun cleaning kit- the one MEANT for say , 12 guage- see, that rod is about 40 caliber or better- you really think your puny 22 rod( which is what you get in the so-called "universal " kits) is going to do the job????- even on my 44 mag rifle, i use a SHOTGUN rod- you want something fairly close to the bullet diameter so it doesn't twist
