As described, the clear coat is peeling off the black endcap on the stock of this 700 LH i inherited, i don't know if i want to keep it or sell it, seeing as i'm not a lefty. Is there any way i can strip the clear off and reclear just the cap? makes it look crappy IMHO, or is it even worth it? i may just sell the gun, how much less do you think its worth with the peeling?

i should add, its a 1987 so the rest of the rifle is not mint by any means, but it looks significantly better than if you were just going off the cap

My approach to this rifle would be to strip the complete stock and refinish. If you attempt to touch up the end piece it will stand out as a touch up because the rest of the stock shows the years of wear.

If you're planning to keep it, and it bugs you. I would tape it off at the white line, remove the finish from the tip and reapply a finish. I think remington used plastic for those forend tips.....

If you're gonna sell it, doing bother it won't affect the value in my opinion.

Sell the rifle as is. Your opening up a can of worms if you attempt to refinish the stock. The can of worms being getting the old finish completely off as Remington used an epoxy based factory finish which is impervious to commercial paint strippers. So you either scrape it off, or burn it off which is tricky as you heat the finish with a torch just until it bubbles, when it cools it becomes brittle then it scrapes off far easier. Heat it to much and you scorch the wood beneath. There may indeed be chemicals that will eat these epoxy gun stock finishes but I am not familiar with them. I speak from experience on this, unless your really in love with this gun, sell it as is.

I attempted to strip my father-in-laws 1979 700 and it was a bit more work than I wanted. Still came out like crap. I'd sell it as is and let the next guy worry about it. (if he worries at all. )
