Clearing trails help!!!

We maintain our 12km of trails with chainsaws and a bar drag for behind the ATV. The chainsaw does use up chains and bars but it is the cheapest option. We clear around the stumps a little bit with a shovel and then cut flush to the ground. The chain does throw some sparks when you hit dirt but lots of oil helps keep it alive for awhile.

The drag keeps the growth down and smooths out some of the wheel depressions in the heavily used sections.

Some of our trails were reclaimed fireroads and the spruce sapplings were so tightly packed you coukld not walk through them. We used a saw blade attachment on a commercial sized weedwacker for this. One guy runs the machine the other guy clears the cut sapplings.

What I find amazing is how fast the trails grow in. Dont touch a section for a year or two and they are almost completely grown in with poplar seedlings and raspberry canes.

One thing we did discover is that the wolves love the trails. They must be using them to shortcut over to the deer's usual forest trails.
