Close range hunting with 6-power scope?

I have a X6. Never had a situation I get handicaped.
Mind you I shot a bear this spring at 5 yrds. With a 2.5-8. I still found that a little much at that ranger.
It's all about compromise.

You'll be fine with a 6X- I have shot several bears and deer over the years with 6X scopes, them and the 4X are my favourite, even on "open country" rifles
( whatever they may be) 4 yards to 400 yards is quite doable with a fixed6- not so with a fixed 20.
As for variables, I have heard a zillion stories about scopes being turned up on a close shot and the hunter not being able to make it or guessed , so why hunt with one when you can use a fixed 6 if your terrain is that inconsistent?
I once shot a deer with an 8-32X at less than 35 yards, quit using variables after that totally unless they are on a light varminter.

I recently acquired a 270 rifle with a 6X scope. I have until now always used 4X scopes. I have a 3x-9x on another scope and last fall for example, I had it set on 4 and when I saw and shot a deer I never even considered playing with the magnification before shooting at about 100 yards. I've encountered deer and black bears as close as 3 or 4 yards and even a 6x7 Roosevelt elk at that range once. Realistically speaking though, I find it is not unusual to see game at 20 to 40 yards on occasion, so will a 6X scope be too powerful? I guess I'll find out when I try it at 25 metres at the range, but I don't have another 4x available and it is a nice rig as is so I'd prefer not to change anything.

Look at the field of view specs. Chances are, it will be perfectly acceptable.

You are overthinking it here my friend.

You have a nice set of quick-detach mounts on that rifle so it is a simple matter of removing it and using the irons if you find yourself hunting in the West Coast Salal.

I inherited a .270 with a Leupold 6X scope on it several years ago.

It had been my father-in-law's hunting rig, and served him well for decades.

It did not take me long to get used to it, and I've no regrets on leaving the fixed 6x scope on it.

Thanks 'Boo.
