Want close to, buy a CZ/VZ 58-858 or wait for Tactical imports to bring in the Type 81 next year...
I'm personally waiting for a Type 81 or two, or three.
MSRP on these is $1200, according to Tactical Imports' website...

Kind of high for something that probably costs the Chinese State Arsenal $20 to manufacture on a good day (if that). Plus, if Norinco's SKS's or TT-33 Tokarevs are any indication of Chinese military rifle finish quality, I wouldn't hold my breath for anything "spectacular". Rough machining and sharp edges are surely to be expected, as was the case with all other Chinese military firearms I've handled. It's pretty clear that they just don't give a crap about quality control and sometimes even about the metal they use and/or tolerances.
Honestly, I too am intrigued by the Type 81... BUT for $1200, you can have almost two CZ-858's or a tactical-grade CSA Vz-58 with all kinds of toys & options on it (beautiful finish on those, by the way). In essence, if the Chi-Com Type 81 comes in at $1200 plus tax & shipping, they will not sell well once the initial "newness" wears out. Anyway, the Type 81 is not any more of an AK than a Vz-58. It basically looks like an SKS/AK abortion.

My secret hope is that we can have these in semi-auto/non-restricted in a not-so-distant future : the AK-12!

That, I'd have no problem paying $1200 for! (because it's the real deal and actually made by Russian arsenals)
