What is the closest thing to an AK47 in Canada? I'm TOTALLY NEW to red rifles but the more I read about them, look at fellow CGNer's pics and after shooting an actual AK47 in Las Vegas recently I'm intrigured with these types of rifles. Info, pics, etc all welcome. Thanks CGNer's,

Closest thing to an AK47 in Canada is... an AK47. They are prohibited to new owners since 1995, but some were grandfathered into legal possession.

If they're approved, hopefully sometime next year, the Chinese Type 81 rifle will be the closest you can get, though like the VZ-58, they're quite a different animal from the Kalshnikov internally.

Want an AK, going to have to buy a Valmet for $4000.00 plus.

Want close to, buy a CZ/VZ 58-858 or wait for Tactical imports to bring in the Type 81 next year...

I'm personally waiting for a Type 81 or two, or three.

Got both a cz and ak, cz I shoot, the ak never leaves the house. Identical features yet one is prohib and one is restricted. Our gunlaws are great....

Our Gun laws are completely mind numbingly stupid

Well... that's because they were copied off gun laws created by a very methodical and elitist government of the 1930's-1940's in Germany... a government with an insatiable appetite for world domination, starting with their own people.

MSRP on these is $1200, according to Tactical Imports' website... Kind of high for something that probably costs the Chinese State Arsenal $20 to manufacture on a good day (if that). Plus, if Norinco's SKS's or TT-33 Tokarevs are any indication of Chinese military rifle finish quality, I wouldn't hold my breath for anything "spectacular". Rough machining and sharp edges are surely to be expected, as was the case with all other Chinese military firearms I've handled. It's pretty clear that they just don't give a crap about quality control and sometimes even about the metal they use and/or tolerances.

Honestly, I too am intrigued by the Type 81... BUT for $1200, you can have almost two CZ-858's or a tactical-grade CSA Vz-58 with all kinds of toys & options on it (beautiful finish on those, by the way). In essence, if the Chi-Com Type 81 comes in at $1200 plus tax & shipping, they will not sell well once the initial "newness" wears out. Anyway, the Type 81 is not any more of an AK than a Vz-58. It basically looks like an SKS/AK abortion.

My secret hope is that we can have these in semi-auto/non-restricted in a not-so-distant future : the AK-12!

That, I'd have no problem paying $1200 for! (because it's the real deal and actually made by Russian arsenals)

i dont think the ak 12 will be coming in anytime soon i bet it will be marked as a ak although they do look similar to the velmant in the lower receiver area so it mite not

What calibre are these valmets? I seen "murdoc" from Arma-Coat has some CZ858's for sale that look appealing ... damn guns eh?! HAHA. Let's see some pics of your rifles and different variants you're all talking/posting about!!!

Hey, I just looked at the Tactical Imports website and it says the barrel is 455mm. Can they perhaps add another 2mm to that please or change the Canadian gun laws so that 455mm is still non-restricted. You could even just lie and say its 457mm. How would they know if its got a grenade launcher on it?

Type 81? What the hell is that?..... (Goes and googles it)........ I WANT ONE!!!
Looks an awful lot like an SKS-D in a Choate folder but for three times the price. I'd really like to see TI try to justify four bills for a Norinco.

Wow, I didn't even know what this Choate side folder was until you said it. Looked it up and you're right. May as well buy an SKS and throw that on. I'm not a fan of the SKS-D. I like the longer barrel rifles more.
