Love this '42 Maltby No4Mk1 that I just acquired from another CGNutter deal on the EE Forum. Been spending more time holding that No4 Mk1 while watching Band of Brothers episodes in Holland's Operation Market Garden "Crossroads episode", I believe. I've been with my M1 Garand post war Springer prior to obtaining this No4 Mk1 Maltby. :50cal:

Now here's the rub.... I want to shoot this No4 Mk1 in my service rifle matches, but I just cannot warm up to the issued (early style) sights. I much prefer the CMk3 later issued sights taken from a buddy's 1945 Long Branch, way cooler parkerizing job, but for my competition purposes (read : rapid sight changes under stress of run-downs) I really like the machining/engraving/marking of the CMk3 rear sights. :shotgun:

If I put the CMk3 sights on the '42 Maltby, will my #### fall off ? Any collectors out there ? I greatly fear losing some cool value or cool factor if I create such a hybrid (to the purists, that is.... ).

Or maybe I should not advertise what I'm trying to do.... I've already noticed that the means to secure the CMk3 sight from the '45 Long Branch is differs from the base of the '42 Maltby No4 Mk1 base. Maybe this is a moot point...

Peace be to journey, :nest:

Your #### will be fine.

Though you could just memorize the number of clicks between the range marks. Wouldn't you do the same with the M-14's irons?

It's easy to swap the sights and yes it'll fit. Now, you're wanting to remove a machined, click stopping Mk I original sight in favour of a stamped, sheet metal, wartime expedient type sight? The Mk I sight is far better...the only way I'd do it is if your rifle has the L shaped two aperture Mk II sight on it.

However, it's your rifle and it's like a 5 minute job to swap them including wiping the grunge off the spring in the receiver and lubing everything. What the heck...

Perhaps this question should be a poll, so you can garner approval or disapproval from the field of Enfield addicts.
My personal addiction is toward the Cdn rifles, so if you want to improve a Brit rifle by putting a Cdn part on it, then change away.
But this leads to the question: why aren't you using a LongBranch ??

But to have a proper poll, you need to ask the right question. Is it "Will this sight fit & will my #### fall off even if it does?" Or perhaps" Will adjusting the elevation knob cause my own knob to lose elevation?" There are many possible combinations.

yes you will suddenly find youself thinking you should of worn panties to the shoot :)

and the other kids will make fun of you and snicker behind you back :D

now if you were to put on a normal british Mk3 (stamped Mk II on the ladder) or Mk4 (stamped Mk3 on the ladder) you would be fine but a Canadian Mk4 (stamped CMk3) thats just not proper for a Maltby :p :)

Umm... why not just put on a brit MkIII sight? It's identical to the CMkIII except the base is stamped with a spacer and the lever is shaped differently, but fnctionally they are the same.

Wow.... all kinds of great suggestions... I feel (I mean my ####) much safer now.... :shotgun:

Okay, I just had another good look (and feel) at this No4 Mk1 Maltby, I will respect Tyler's advice and leave the Mk1 'click adjustable' rear (machined) sight in place. Counting and feeling kliks is consistent with what I've been practicing over the years with iron sighted M1's and M14's in competition. Once I get my ammo loads dialed in, then I can take the 'White Out' pencil to the rear sight ladder, just like we do with the M1 and M14 elevation pinion. Makes it easier to read while under stress of competition.

Just a heads up; this season I'm showing up at our OSA Service Rifle matches wearing my MICH/ ACH kevlar lid (need one for the butts anyways) and my Tactical Tailor plate carrier (along with plates) with a MOLLE vest on top of the plate carrier. Then along comes the vintage rifles in my arms.... Yeah, baby !! Who needs to carry a shztload of 5/30 rd AR magazines on my vest when I can toss the stripper clipped .303 ammo in my grenade pouches ??? Yeeeeha !!

But Vimy Ridge... It's all about the LCV (or LCF) on the range. Look Cool Value is very important to my self esteem. :nest:

Then you better not. You know, someone might take offence to that fine Canadian artefact being anchored against it's very will to that objectionable heathen of a British rifle! Uggghhh I had to spit to get the bad taste out of my mouth. :runaway:

There now I can fit in! :p

BTW, watching B.o.B. with your rifle!!! That's fcuken sweet! lol

You know that feeling of something just not being perfect, that'll stay with you until you get the perfect part, so keep on looking, you will find it... and then you will feel very Zen...
