Has anyone got their hands on one of these yet?
I'm looking for some first hand experience with them and to know if it was classified restricted solely on the barrel length or if it was deemed an AR variant.
Looks like it should be able to be rebarreled and made non restricted.
YouTube reviews from the US look good so far.

They have been available here for a while now.
2k + $$$
Its a restricted AR variant.
5 round mags.
No last round hold open or bolt release.

Barrel length has nothing to to with status... It's restricted as an AR variant.

Gets great reviews, but it uses AK mags... That means nothing but 5 rounders up here and is a deal-breaker to me!

I find it strange it is deemed an AR variant since the upper and lower are not compatible with AR-15 uppers and lowers. It hardly even looks like an AR.

I finally managed to get out to the range and I fired 80 rounds through my MK47. Here are my initial thoughts. take them as you will:

Right off the bat, I will say that the gun had 1 malfunction with CanAm Dominion Steel Cased HP rounds. The round failed to chamber causing the bolt to only close halfway. The nose of the round was jammed up into the top of the chamber. Simple fix of removing the mag and cycling the action. This only happened once and it was on the second mag of the rifle. Never happened after that. Could be any number of things, but truthfully, I'm not particularly concerned at this point in time. I can't remember the exact name of this type of malfunction, but I hope I described it well enough.

That being said, the AK PMAGs while nice, posed an issue. While they hold 5 rounds, they hold them very tightly. I noticed that when I loaded up a mag to 5 rounds, I would have to really hammer it home for it to seat correctly and catch the mag release/catch. I also found that cycling the bolt was harder with 5 rounds in the mag. I think there is too much spring pressure pushing against the bolt when a 5-round mag is inserted. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but I had better luck loading in 4 rounds into each mag. I think if the PMAGs were pinned to 5.5 rounds it would alleviate the problem.

Other things I noticed was shell ejections. They would be launched 2m back and to the right in a consistent 1m grouping. Nothing wrong with this, just something I noticed.

In terms of performance, other than the initial issue, I had no problems whatsoever. Gun is heavy and I think would benefit from a UBR stock to help balance it out. I personally have a Magpul Fixed MOE stock on order. I didn't want to break the bank on the rifle as I wanted to build a KISS style rifle to pay homage to the AK series while still keeping that tacticool look inherent of the AR platform.

I only shot it out to 50 yards today I didn't have any spotter with me, so shooting it out to 100 would have been pointless as I would not have been able to see my hits on target. My shooting skills aren't the best. I need more practice, hence why I bought this gun (cheap ammo). With a better trigger I can honestly say that this is 1.5-2 MOA gun. I was able to squeeze off some 1MOA groups at 50 yards.

On my rifle, I did have a PWS FSC30 break installed. It certainly made the gun shoot well. Recoil was like a strong push. Best way I can describe it would be like going from a 9mm to a .45. The .45 lacks the snap, but has the push. That's how this gun felt to me vs shooting a 5.56 AR. Overall I found it very pleasant and fun.

Other than that, everything else that I noted were inherent to the rifle, such as having to rack the bolt every time a new mag was inserted as there was no bolt hold open. I knew this going in and while it is different and takes getting used to vs an AR, it was/is not a deal breaker for me. I would have zero issue with this had Canada have full capacity magazines.

I will update this once I shoot it more. I hope to do a 2-day rifle course in the near future, and plan on using this for one of the days. I will post again if and when I do.

CMMG just released their SBR option for the MK47. I'm sure Questar could bring these in:

MK47K

The Mk47 K is the shorter 10″ barreled version of the Mk47 full-sized variants. The Mk47 K features CMMG’s mid-sized receiver based on our Mk3 platform, carved from billet 7075-T6 aluminum. It also features an improved 9″ hand guard designed to be compatible with aftermarket muzzle devices and suppressors. The Mk47 was designed to harness the power and reliability of the 7.62x39mm cartridge utilizing a robust bolt based off our Mk3 (.308). The unique Mk47 lower receiver readily accepts all standard AK Magazines. Every rifle comes equipped with a MOE pistol grip, CTR stock, SV muzzle brake, Mil-Spec Trigger, 30rd AK PMAG, and CMMG’s lifetime quality guarantee.

Awfully expensive gun to shoot cheap bulk ammo in, though.

My cheap parts kit Windham did well on its first outing, with LAR mags. Time will tell whether the bolt stands up or not. The Mutant does have beef on its side.

Agreed, the only way I'd spend that much on a x39 eater is if it could be converted to non restricted like I did with my ACR. Looks like a nice rifle though :)

The mutant is not designed to be a cheap 7.62X39 rifle. It is designed to use the AR gas system and fire control parts to make a rifle that use AK mag properly and can actually last. Colt and, way back, KAC had done similar things for particular markets. Even Robarms had a thing called Rav4 or something based on M96.

For unloading cheap rounds and using LAR mags on Sat plinking, this doesn't make sense in Canada. It makes sense in the US for people who fancy the need of using AR system and AK mags, where they can use 30 round mags.

Agreed. In my case, I bought one because I wanted one. At the end of the day, that's what matters.

How can THIS be an AR variant but the Modern Hunter isnt. The differences are exactly the same. Different, non compatible lower and a different, non compatible upper.

This is one that should be looked into as there is no way this is a "variant" rifle any more than a ford is a variant of a chevy because they both tail 2 inch trailer hitch receivers and have 17 inch tires.

And yes... I know it doesnt have to make sense. I know complaining is just banging your head against a brick wall... I know I know.

Either wait 3 years for a chance, or declare it as a restricted AR variant to make it available right the way.

This is the math all the importers and distributors have to make. Blame it on the lab, the politics and the process of classification. As it sees now, the lab is making the process long and painful because they want more money and manpower. Hopefully there will be some changes if the CPC stays in power.

i agree, and i was hoping against hope that when i initially placed the order it would be NR as the ONLY thing that is compatible with a standard AR15/10 is the bolt, trigger group and buffer tube.

I guess one could make the argument that the railed hand guard is compatible as it is compatible with DMPS .308 but that is too pedantic for our purposes.

The upper and lower are non-compatible with any other style gun as is the BCG.

I got one becasue I can use the AK mags and bulk ammo Ive had for my 12.5 safe queens.

Its an interim solution - I have yet to take mine out for a run - but it had some good points, Its restricted but takes cheap ammo and is fed by lotsa mags that I have. Its a time-in-place hybrid rifle.
Even in the initial offering of 18" bbl its a little heavy - but i wasnt looking for an SBR type rifle in 7.62x39. I miss my AK and this has been the best hybrid Ive seen yet. Time will tell how the gas impigement will deal with the buly 7.62 x 39 ammo .. I do wish they tried a piston upper for this caliber and magwell set up ...

No reason you couldn't have it here now restricted and appeal its status while you enjoy 3 years at the range..?
