Anyone into these...a few diode laser machines claim to be able to mark stainless directly with no sprays or etching. Been wanting one for a while and the price is sure looking good.

I'm looking at the:

Atomstack S7
Sculpfun s9

Looking for some advice on what to buy for a sub 1k machine and any projects examples.

Cheers

If you're using a laser on reflective materials, I would definitely recommend chemical pre-treatment. It will give you both a better finish, and be much safer.

I also recommend a filter enclosure.
Safety glasses are OK, but if anyone else walks in the room it's potentially life changing in a negative way.

Ayup.

Remember. Don't look at the laser with the remaining eye!

Wear your PPE, and take it seriously. As the saying goes, God may love ya, but he isn't set up to give you a new eye!

I ran a bit higher end model in my last few months in the CF. Focus is almost everything. There are a fair few chemical additions that will allow a lower powered laser to leave a permanent mark on otherwise untouchable material. Do your homework!

FWIW the rig I ran was a four axis (it had a rotary unit with) outfit that was able to engrave on glass quite nicely. One of the major(ish) issues I did run in to, was that the glasses provided for etching, were nowhere near as round as the specs called out for, and it all worked out anyways.

ha ha yes, round is not always round, and indexing is tricky.

I would also say that having excellent exhaust fans will be good.

Also, don't leave it running unattended... fires....

here is my latest solution to using up an end-grain cutting board I messed up... can never have too many coasters... But really I was playing with various settings.
