Loads for the 350 RM in a Remington 673, OAL is restricted to 2.800 inches, +/- a few thousanths. However, OAL to approach the lands is considerably greater. Is anyone aware of the reason Remington has such a long jump to the lands in this particular calibre? Would there be a significant pressure spike were the magazine lengthened and bullets loaded to within, say, 10/1000s of the lands? I realise that the older 600 and 660 models also did not permit loading out to the lands. Certainly would appreciate your thoughts on this.

I have a bit of perspective on these guns as I've owned and loaded for quite a few 35cal shooters including three different 350RemMags (600,660 amd M77). Also a very good hunting buddy of mine had a M673 for many years. The Ruger and the Remingtons I own are similarly long throated.

As you have discovered these guns more often than not have a pretty healthy jump to the lands with conventionally shaped spitzers. Many of my loads jump .300" to the lands but accuracy is good still. I find my guns can often safely digest a little more powder with this almost "Weatherby like" freebore condition. When I ordered a custom made reamer for a 350WSM wildcat project I duplicated this longer throat.

I recommend you seat out to the max your mag will allow and go shooting - as long as feeding and functioning are good (and you have at least .020" to the lands).

The COAL used with my friend's M673 loads was 2.825" for all his 225s (Partitions, Sierra, Xbullet), 250s (Speer Grand Slam) and even 300gr (Barnes Original) loads. The 250 Speer Grand Slam was his favourite as it was repeatably sub MOA and got great velocity in his gun. I'm looking at a copy of his load notes as I write this.

My guess as to why manufacturers do this long throat is that these guns are all hunters not target guns and that they are throated to receive really big round nose bullets occasionally without problems of a pressure spike as you call it.

Hope this is of interest. The 350RM is a gooooood one!!!

Thanks, Whelan,

I have a 0.300" jump to the lands with Nosler 225 Partitions, just as you reported. My magazine permits me to load to 2.820" OAL. You are correct that I do find acceptable accuracy, and in a few instances, exceptional accuracy. I was especially wondering why there is such exaggerated freebore. I am coming to the conclusion that this may be a Remington feature. This is the only Remington I own. Primarily, I am shooting Winchesters with a couple of Brownings, and I have far more room for longer COL with these magazines. I really appreciate your experience and insight.
