There's been a couple of albino deer hanging around the local refinery for a couple of years now. These pics were taken last week.

Yep, that's a codominant roan, genetically speaking. Not albino, which is fully recessive homozygous.
Yea!! ............ What he said!!

I'm not really sure what "homozygous" is, but I think I'm glad I'm not one.
:D
.

we also have a few white deer on cape sable island, shelburne county. should be able to spot them but the woods is so darn thick they can hide very well in there.

That is a very cool picture Super... I see at least three other deer in the top frame...
Seriously, talk to your boss... tell him BIGREDD says they need killin....:D

I'll see what I can do, but I doubt the Irvings will appreciate the offer to shoot deer on their property. :)

Haha, just a genetic term for having two of the same alleles for a gene, alleles are just the parts of chromosomes, consider them the "genetic code". Like blue eyes is homozygous recessive, but if you have one recessive allele (blue) and one dominant allele (brown), you'll have brown eyes and be heterozygous. Just like the ###es, homo=same (genes in out case), hetero=mix. You can also have two dominant alleles, and be homozygous dominant. This is why you HAVE to be homozygous to display a recessive trait, like an albino, or blue eyes, if there's a dominant allele present, it overrides hence the "dominant". It's a guarantee you're homozygous for many things, and heterozygous for others.

What happened with this deer is that it has BOTH phenotypes (genetic outcomes as per the alleles, that are visible) displayed at the same time, hence it's called codominant, also known as "roan" with livestock (mating a red cow and a white bull will often make for roan offspring). So neither trait here is dominant over the other, and both are displayed.

Pretty impressive. I've sent that to my GF (geneticist/prof. at Western Wash Univ.) to make sure yer not making it up! :p

:) Stuart

(BTW,You wouldn't happen to have a lead on a good deal on a used PCR machine? She needs one for her lab.)

They got rid of all the un-wanteds a few years back during the strike. The union got starved out over the two years they were out. It was a dumb move on the union's part.
