Hello CGNs!

I have to refinish two barrels and tried, in vain I might add, to have solutions shipped from Brownells or Midway.
Thus my question: is anybody aware of a Canadian dealer/source carrying Belgian Blue or Oxpho Blue?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Don’t use cold blue for a barrel. It will look splotchy and wear off. It’s only good for touch ups and small parts that don’t get rubbed too much.

Rust blue. PJs products in Canada.

Thats not entirely true as a blanket statement.

I have a selection of cold blueing solutions (bought before the cross border restrictions became a reality) from 5 or six different manufacturers. You are right that blotching can happen but if you can experiment a little bit, you can discover that different solutions act differently on different metals. The right manufactures solution matched to the right steel will give a blue finish that is hard to tell from hot blued.

Dewdney Mountain Distributors

They are on Vancouver Island, but will ship anywhere. They sell Oxpho Blue in small bottles, right up to 1 US Gallon containers

That's an older phone number but just google their site. Great to deal with

Oxpho Blue is the only cold blue I have used and I think it is the best of the cold blues... Much prefer a hot blue...

I know for a fact that Rusty Wood has Oxpho and one other on the shelf. Plus he also does hot bluing. I've had a few things hot blued in the past and they came out a nice rich dark and even colour.

Either slow rust blue or hot blue if you are doing a complete barrel. If going to the time and bother, why not do it properly. Yes you can get a nice looking job with cold blue if done properly. But there is more to the outcome than looks alone---like durability.

You are quite likely better off to send your barrels to someone to professionally hot blue
Shipping barrels both ways wont be as much as the cold blue one way
