Cold Bluing Vs. Hot Bluing

Is it worth it to try and Cold Blu a rifle yourself if the original is wearing off or should you just spend the money and get a gunsmith to Hot blu it?
 
Soem rifles (those with soldered fittings) can't be hot blued without risking melting the solder and polluting the 'smith's bluing tank. Your only other option is rust bluing which is time consuming and pricey. But oh so nice....
 
Cold bluing is for touching up wear spots. Hot bluing is pricey. Which one you use will depend on what rifle. Cold blue a Cooey. Hot blue a Rem 700. Bluing isn't your only option either. Look into Duracoat.
"...can't be hot blued without risking melting the solder..." The solutions run 285 -300F. Depending on the type, silver solder melts at 1200F.
 
Hot caustic bluing solution can attack soft solder.
Cold bluing is generally a pretty poor substitute for hot bluing, rust bluing, hot water bluing, or one of the numerous coatings.
The quality of a hot bluing job depends to a great extent on the quality of preparation of the parts to be blued. Most of the labour and expense are in the preparation.
A bit of wear and tear is normal with use. Don't worry about it.
