Im sure this has beaten to death already... But I have done about everything i can think of about my cold bore shot. many changes have been made to my gun with not much change... My cold bore shot used to be all over the place. Now after all the things i have done to my rifle over the last six months... stock, trigger kit, bedded action. tried different cleaning techniques. I am now down to this... My cold bore is half a mil high at 25 yards. If I let the gun sit for just a few min the first shot is half a mil high.... and the rest of the shots are spot on! WTF! any input would be appreciated.

Is it the cold bore, or is it the first round in a mag? Typically cold bore would be more than just 1 shot, as it takes a couple shots to really heat up a barrel any especially a heavy barrel. I do find a warmer barrel tightens up groups, but there isn't a significant difference from shot 1 to shot 2. More like a difference from shot 1 to shots 5 and up.

Are you loading the mag on an open or closed bolt?

First round loaded from a mag loaded into an open bolt may feed at a different angle, or seat differently, than the rest which would be loaded from a closed bolt. More often than not the first round from an open bolt will be at a higher angle, which may cause it to hit the chamber on it's way in and deform, more or differently than the rest which feed from the closed bolt.

Read about this awhile ago and it has has proven to make my groups much more consistent in most of my .22's anyways.

You didn't mention if your gun was a 10/22 but this is a common problem with them.

The same theory proved true in my Savage MKII though.

Give it a try.

Barrel is not touching anywhere. And is not pressure bedded

I guess it would be the first round in the mag

I load the mag with the bolt open.

mlehtovaar I will have to pay attention to that. Thanks

Well give it a shot.

Like I said it worked on my Savage MKII and 10/22 Target Tactical.

The 10/22 was just terrible for this when feeding from the BC mags especially.

If it works it will be the cheapest fix you will ever come across on a rifle. ;)

Clayne b. Some 22 rimfires exhibit a tendency to put the first shot out of a "cold" barrel out of the group slightly, and there may or may not be a solution.
At one time in the not-too-distant past, I had 3 - 541S Remingtons.
One of that trio did just what you described.
I went through that rifle like a dose of salts, trying to resolve the issue.
It got somewhat better, but never did abandon the tendency completely.
It was not much, but enough to irritate me.
I finally sold it off to a fellow who claimed not to care.
I believe it may have something to do with harmonics, but am not sure.
I have a large number of Rimfires at present, and I believe I have them all trained properly, lol.
Hope you can resolve your issue. Eagleye.

One of my 40Xes exhibits a similar behaviour. The 1st shot from a clean bore is in the 7-8 ring at 1o/c on an A23 target at 50m. After 3 or 4 shots the group centres. It happens so regularly that I'm alarmed when it doesn't happen.
The ammunition seems to make no difference.
At the halfway mark of one of our competitions we take a break for a chinwag - the 1st shot or 2 afterwards are also off in the 1o/c direction but not as severely.
Initially it was aggravating but as long as I see the behaviour is consistent I have accepted it and just accomodate.

I did some cleaning on the gun to night, I mopped it with hoppe's 9 and brushed the phuck out of it with a nylon brush. and did a 2 passes with the bronze brush. then ran some easly fitting patches followed by some tight fitting. i was getting lead slivers and little chunks of black stuff out. I repeated this process a few times. I should get a chance to go shoot it tomorrow. I think this is the cleanest this rifle bore has ever been in its life.

I went out and shot.
93 degrees
Durring wait time the rifle and ammo were in the shade. and i was working on my tan.
Shot prone with bipod and rear bag.
