Was up at the range last Sunday with the SKS and I was thinking how cold can it go. We get some cold weather up here, so the next time we dip down to -40 I am heading up to the range to put it through its paces. Anyone out there shoot one in -40, -50 or colder? How did it perform, any malfunctions?

-41 Central Ontario, last winter. Over 100 rounds, only one stovepipe. Shot my SVT-40 the same day, no malfunctions. 870 and 590A1 also both functioned correctly under the conditions. My body however, functioned correctly for about an hour before finger control was completely lost.

Note that I oil my guns for storage but, always give them a good wipe off prior to use.

I shot a pair of 858s last week at -4. Both would not cycle properly. Both worked two weeks earlier at +10. Both were lubed with lithium grease.

I have washed off all the grease with brake cleaner, re-lubed with G96 and am waiting for -10 to test again. I expect the rifles to work just fine.

For real cold weather you want to have no lube or a lube designed to work in cold wx like CLP. If there is any grease in the firing pin channel or the op rod housing, the rifle can be real gummed up in cold weather. Rinse these parts with some gas, Varsol or kerosene.

The lowest I have ever seen after spending the last 12 years in the Yukon Territory is -55 Deg C and it took everything I had just to get to work in one piece. Here are the lowest recorded temperatures ever.............................. -129 in Vostok is impressive!

You guys in Ontario know that wind chill doesn't really count with non living things / exposed flesh right?
All it might do is get an object down to ambient temperature quicker.

-40 no problems. I dropped the warm charger full of ammo in the snow and it got covered in ice. Loaded it in, ice and all! No problaimo.
