Cold weather shooting with AR ....need tips!

I could be wrong but couldn’t that cause an out of battery firing condition? I know I’ve read it can happen to M14s and even some other semi autos.
It has to do with the firing pin triggering the primer before the bolt gets into full lock.
Maybe someone with more AR experience can elaborate or correct me if I’m wrong.

That can’t happen in an AR.

Good to know. Why is that?
For example, why would an M14 be susceptible to this and not an AR?

If the bolt isnt rotated and locked in place, the firing pin can't contact the primer...it's not long enough.

On an M14, the firing pin is always in a position where it could contact the primer with enough inertia.

Firing pin should be physically prevented from impacting the primer until after the bolt rotates in an AR10 BCG. "should"....However raised primers will cause an out of battery kaboom, dirty rifle i.e brass shards. This rifles minty, clean and ammo is perfect, hence why i let the bolt fly.

Hello,

Been doing a bitt of - 30 C shooting lately with my modified Stag10 and noticed it having the odd issue when i let the charging handle fly. Strips the round and loads it up but has an issue closing the bolt fully. Only issue I have had yet with this rifle, figured it was the cold. Perhaps the CLP becomes to viscous at this temperature creating too much drag? when I drop the mag & let the charging handle fly again the BCG goes into battery with no issues. Goes bang till she's empty after that. So any of you have any tips for shooting AR's in these colder temperatures?

I've never had a problem with lubriplate grease or ATF in extreme cold.

seems to be very hard to find but works for me

When I was in the army(infantry)over 23 years, I did 4 sovereignty operations to the artic, Plus just normal winter training. I found automatic transmission fluid (ATF) worked well after -30 on rifles and machine guns

Dry Graphite works best so far from what I have tried. Seems to stay in extractor crevices and ahears to the firing pin. However it does blow off quite quickly on the exterior of the bolt, so I tend to think I'm running with out lube at all there.....idunno.

I tried ATF yesterday - 25 C ..... it worked but I stripped it off last night. Could not stand the smell of the ATF.

Any one ever try Liquid Wrench "Dry Lube"?.....contains Cerflon which is supposed to have greater lubricity and adhesion characteristics then Graphite. Uses the same alcohol carrier to apply as the Graphite powder I use and dries in a couple minutes. Might stick better....idunno.

Ordered the G96 "Complete Gun Treatment" that Epoxy7 recommended. Not easy to find.....found it at Wanstalls...ordered several of the large cans. Can't wait to try it. Hopefully this cold snap holds till it arrives.
