I'm not really familiar with trap machines, and as it turns out neither are most of the other people at the club here in northern AB. I was wondering what the lower operating temperature would be for the trap machine (our trap house is unheated)? I don't want to be breaking parts due to cold.
And just out of curiosity - what's the coldest/worst weather you've ever shot trap in?

cold weather GMV

We use that machine here in Saskatoon in the winter. we never shoot past -10 deg C . Its too cold to stand there if there is any wind. The machine works fine at that temp.

Thanks, thats what we were figuring too. Do you let the motor warm up any more than usual before starting?

We use Beomats but we shoot all winter regardless of temp. I shot a league shoot 2 weeks ago -12 but with 70km wind gusts I have never been so proud of shooting a 46/50. I have shot in -25 a few times but not usually by choice.
Regards

We shot yesterday in OLiver @ about -10 in a snow storm. We have a winchester western with one of Ian Brotherston's traploaders on the top. Works awesome but we have to heat the button before we start as it has a tendincy to give some grief and keep throwing targets if we don't

Noisy Mouse,

Some of my customers have shot trap -30. I'd recommend an external heating source or large watt light bulb for the traphouse. I've heard one report of a motor on a GMV ATM seizing up on a cold start. The machine wouldn't turn over to warm itself up. No broken parts.

BOGMAN - Thanks for the plug, Good to hear your machine is working out well. BTW, if you're in the market for voice activation give me a call.

We wrap battery blankets around the gear case to keep it warm. We discovered that the lubricant inside our Beomat gear cases is a gooey vaseline like lubricant which really surprised me. I'd prefer to see a good gear oil in them but there's no way to get that original "grease" out of them short of totally dismantling them. So the best we can do is try to keep them warm with the battery blankets in an attempt to keep that crap thinner if we can.

I have seen some clubs use a 60 watt trouble light left on near the gear case. It puts off enough heat to keep the gear case warm.

Put a small electric heater up close to the machine. It could be put on a timer set to warm it up for a few hours before the shooters show up. I know of one that's been used in -30C with no problems.

Thanks all,
looks like i'll be picking up a heat source, that battery blanket sounds like a really good idea, but i'll be trying the trouble light first....that is if i can find some other shooters to get out in this -30C weather.

The Trap Machine (W-W) at our club has/had one of those loaders on top, and it completely fell apart and that was in the good weather, and I do mean fell apart!! The Western manual traps(1524 I think) seem to work in any weather though. Don't know where they got the loader for the top and don't know how much it cost but I'd be wanting every cent back!

The TrapLoader CS270 installed in Prince Albert was working great until the carousel blew apart. I've talked to Ron this morning and will replace the carousel with our new stronger stainless steel model.

Sorry, didn't mean to cause a fuss, but, just keepin' with my policy of "tellin it like it is"...didn't mean no harm.
