Hi all :D
I would like to get some info of the negative aspects of getting "collector status".
The only reason I ask is because I need to be a club member in Quebec in order to get an ATT.
I can't be a member until mid to late October due to work and I would really like to have my VZ in my hands.
However, I have been informed that if I get collector status I don't need to be a club member to get an ATT.
Also, what are the positive aspects of having collector status.
Thank you all for your time and patience,

IIRC For collector status they dont give you a ATT - you are supposed to show historical interest and knowledge of the firearm(s) in question etc.

The idea of getting the gun earlier likely won't meet the requirement. Join a cheaper club temporarily.

Thanx Kevin but I don't think temporary club memberships exist in Quebec.
And if I own restricted and suddenly stop my membership, they can take my restricted firearms away.
Club memberships are 100$+

Sixty you may have your terms mixed up, an ATT is an "Authorisation to transport" it's a paper that says you can transport your restricted on a given date to a given location (temporary type) ie used to go to competitions or to bring to a gunsmith or pickup at a dealer etc... the other type would be non date specific but still has a given location specified (yearly for lets say a gun club membership).

In order to poses a restricted weapon you need to justify a reason why you should have it, ie being a shooter at a gun club is a reason, being a collector is a reason.

What you need right now in order to acquire your gun is a reason not an ATT. If you qualify as a collector you now have a legitimate reason to poses such firearm, they will give you an ATT to pickup your gun from the seller, but then you cannot transport it anymore until you ask for another ATT to and from the location.

Even with my "to and from the range" ATT does not allow me to go the my neigbours house. If you were a member of a club you have the reason to poses they then give you an ATT to pickup (temporary) and you have a seperate ATT to the range (yearly).

I believe one downside of a collector status is that THEY can inspect your storage area and paperwork and it's a requirement for that status, no "get a warrant then come back" accepted  And I don't think collector status happens over night.

Hope this helps

Merci Furet,
I'm gonna contact St.-Jacques on Saturday to see if I can apply without going there, pay and apply by mail.
I can't go since I work every single weekend and I can't even take a day off until mid to late October....
I just wanted some info on the collector status thing.
Thanx to all,

I have collecters status and the forms were not hard to fill out. Just find a little info on the guns that you already have(rifles shotguns, etc) and put it down on the application. At least here in ontario, it only took about a week to process. Regarding the inspections, if you own more then 10 firearms, you are open to being inspected. So, if you already have 10 or more guns, go for it, as you are already required to let them in. Not just anyone though, it has to be a firearms officer, not just your local cop. Also, it does suck that they are allowed to come in, but if you have nothing to hide, you don't have much to fear, unless the firearms inspector is fishing for stuff to nail you with.

I am in montreal and have collector status and dint have to fill out any papers. Everything was over the phone. If you want to go shooting your collection though you need to be a member at a club since they wont let collectors get a temporary ATT to a range without one.

As for the fact there allowed to check how your guns are stored, they have to call ahead of time, they can't just show up unless you have been avoiding them or making it too difficult for them to arange a time to come.

Overall the benefits of collecting are that I dont have to pay huge membership fee's like those charged at places like CTVSP with there horrible service and manners. And if you forget to renew your range membership and suddenly you're offered a restricted gun for a really low price, you dont have to wait tell you renew your membership. Not paying for range also saves alot of money for buying more guns.
