I have a Remington 1100 that i had the 28 inch barrel cut back to 22 inches today and now i am looking to have a choke installed. My local option is Colonial choke tubes. That is what my gunsmith does. BUT i have read online some horror stories about them coming out and the barrel having to be cut again and re choked. Has anyone heard of this? IS it common?

Barrels have to be measured and at that time it is determined what choke system can be successfully installed. Often the bore is too large or it is too far out of concentric. I used to accurately measure the bore and thickness before cutting. Many I could not do with the Colonial Thin Wall Tubes. Remington barrels are often very 'off' when cut back a lot...

If memory serves Colonial thin wall tubes are what was fitted into my Win. SX-1 barrel at least 20 years ago. The gunsmith that did the work measured the barrel thoroughly for wall thickness and concentricity. I remember the barrel just qualified for the thin wall tubes. There has been a lot of lead pass down that barrel since that time without an issue. I would say after market choke tube issues mainly lie with the installation. Not every barrel is suitable, and not every gunsmith is a stellar installer of tubes.

Poly Choke is ugly but properly installed works just fine. The last one I installed in the early 70's is still going strong...

I've had good luck with Colonial brand tubes.

I personally feel that the problem lies with tubes that are thin walled. Shooters tend not to pay attention to proper match-up of shot and constriction. Proper cleaning, proper choke lube and tubes not tightened can lead to removal issues. The thinner walled tubes made for older guns will bulge easier than the modern designs that incorporate factory tubes.

I would select an extended tube, these handle the punishment of shot better due to the considerably heavier walls, and the punishment is mostly outside the barrel.

Bold print, BOLD PRINT that warning! :) :) :)

Some of those older barrels are horribly non-concentric.
