Interesting faint markings on butt plate looking to be U.S.N. over .V I or P Picture does not show too well but may

be that this was one of 2000 sold to Norfolk Navy yard as part of arming before the Civil war. Serial number indicates made in 1856.

Hard to say from just the pictures and without provenance but the placement and JLH look right from the photos I’ve seen of authenticated examples. The U.S.N. almost looks too bold but that might just be the photo or the pitting throwing me off.

It sure looks like it though doesn’t it.

Does anyone have the SN range of the shipment?

Serial # 59860 fits right in at the end of the 2000 piece 1857 contract. It is identified as the 3rd model with iron backstrap and square trigger guard
very surprised to find this in Canada and unmodified. The armory did a lot of conversions to cartridge after 1873 and many that are left show this.
